Klipspringer: Honestly I cannot stand having to use Windows 8 on my work PC. Why on earth would people want it on their phones?

Because it's a completely different platform, and one for which the Modern UI was actually designed?

OEM's now get Windows Phone & Windows 8.1 OS for free if the screen size of phone/tablet is smaller than 9".

I like this demo (although I still can't stand the side face shots Microsoft is using):

its pretty damn cool, been thrashing this in the beta releases.  You guys are going to love trying it out when the developer preview rolls out shortly

  • An enhanced Start screen: Between the ability to customise your Start background with a photo and the option for a third row of tiles
  • Action Center, which lets you see notifications from any app, a new Calendar with week view and integrated weather like you get in Outlook, and the new Word Flow keyboard that lets you glide quickly over the keys to type and learns your writing style too
  • A new Skype app, split Music, Video and Podcast apps, and cool features that help you get the most your data allowance, battery life and storage: Data Sense, Wi-Fi-Sense, Storage Sense and Battery Saver
  • Amazing new ways that Windows and Windows Phone work together: Synced tabs and favorites with Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Phone, newer apps that let you purchase once and use on both your phone and PC, and theme color changes that follow you across all your Windows devices
and Enterprise Security features that are just unavailable on any other smartphone available at such a low price point, such as VPN and S/MIME support and customisable Mobile Device Management (MDM) enrollment.

Looking forward to this. Hopefully Samsung and 2 degrees are proactive in rolling it out to the Ativ S unlike GDR3 which has still not been released.

You have been able to bypass the carrier approval process as of GDR3 release last year. It's free too. You do risk voiding your warranty though with your carrier AFAIK if anything goes wrong with phone if it has a developer preview build loaded. I have been running this since launch with no issues on my Lumia 720 and now Lumia 1520.

I've already signed up for the Developer Preview program (through app studio and installed the app on my phone, signed in and ticked the checkbox)

If I'm reading reports correctly, this means I should be able to get 8.1 on or about 10 April, does this sound right? What is the process once you have the Preview for Developer app installed - do you just receive the early 8.1 update through the usual update mechanism?

personally I think software voiding your hardware warranty is a crock of poos and wouldn't stand up in small claims or CGA

Strong rumors from multiple sites that have been in reliable in the past point to 10th April. You hit the 'check for update' button under phone update as usual if you are developer unlocked and on a WiFi network and away it will go. Reading through some of the tweets today though, the update might even hit before 10th April.

Something that I was looking forward to was to be able to interact with my phone via Win8 PC. eg Phone gets a text message, I have to stop an answer it - it would be cool if I got a notification on my PC and could reply using the keyboard and send the text via my phone. Yeah I guess I could use email but I think the two platforms should be tied together more.
Anyway, looking forward to installing 8.1 when it hits the dev preview.

That would be so good...

Not sure if posted earlier but with the release of Windows Phone 8.1, all OEM's will now get Nokia Here Drive + for free. It's the world license version that will be free for every WP8.1 handset. Existing handsets like Nokia Lumina 520 that only come with Here Drive license will get free update to Here Drive + as well.

Great list of improvements, WP now really starting to approach being a usable OS for my own personal use case scenarios (many of which are totally niche and not mainstream), not there quite yet but tantalisingly close. Between this and the possibility of a larger screened iPhone I could soon live with basically any of the major mobile operating systems.
