Just a followup, the reason for version checks is that

a) VF don't want you turning your device into a non-VF device, for obvious reasons
b) It's important to know that the version your upgrading from actually supports being upgraded to the new version. This gets REAL tricky, and it's impossible to check every combination (QA is a PITA), so it's made simple by only supporting known good combinations. For VF 750v, that means if you have something other than the original 750v ROM you will not be able to upgrade your device.

Many people feel "it's my device, i can do what i want", but as soon as they find out they've bricked their device they go back to VF for a replacement "it just stopped working...". Have seen this all too often...

The official version is not far away, and you're gaining nothing by installing the ATT ROM - except the inability to upgrade to the final VF ROM when it ships.

Well people should be able to install the original ROM the upgrade to the new one when the time comes.

Also there is no reason why one couldn't just use the new ROM file and upgrade with that using the standard flashing tool, it would certainly get around version checks.

Blah blah, yes I know - but if I had a dollar for everytime someone killed a device by flashing a pirated ROM on I'd be on an island instead of posting here...

Bottom line is that flashing pirated ROMs is illegal, voids your warranty, and can KILL your device - not to mention cause hassles when updates are made available. For devices where it's detected that ROMs have been flashed warranty requests will be rejected (yes, this has happened to people).

Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware...
Caveat mico - let the flasher beware...

And meanwhile the advice is "wait for a ROM from Vodafone that does not bring anything different really". It's not like Windows Mobile devices can connect to Vodafone Live! and there's nothing you lose by using the AT&T ROM. It even auto configure the device for the network presented by the SIM card - I didn't have to do anything to get it going.

I will stop here. A lot of people in these forums don't like "customised" ROMs - we all know this too well.

I understand the support costs involved when we are talking about imported handsets, but a Pocket PC is more of a personal tool than a standard feature phone. Even Nokia calls its more advanced phones "media computers". And seriously, I hate the idea of giving up control of my device to an operator that probably knows less than I do in terms of computing.

If Vodafone would make the radio part of it compliant, I wouldn't care less of what OS it is running, providing I could install it myself.

Wouldn't be so bad if VF and others gave the weary Joe public a bit of consideration by way of communicatiing with their "already" interested community rather than just concentrating of new business.

That being said, most of the guys that blat their devices with pirate ROM's actually love muckin around with that kind of thing so I don't think there will be too much crying over a temporarily goosed unit?

Still each to his own...I would have done mine today aswell but I'm just plain too busy over the next week to get near it.

Hope the VF ver arrives in the mail in the meantime.

Really? If VF and Palm didnt care about existing customers do you think they'd go through the major work of providing a WM6 upgrade to your device FREE of charge? Palm issued a press release a while back stating the upgrades were coming (that's what started this thread!). If it were only about "new business" then they'd release a new device with WM6 and tell 750v owners to upgrade!

I can't stop the rocket heads from doing what they want, but I hate seeing newbies trying to do things they aren't up to the task of doing, then crying when it all goes to hell...

Vodafone (and consider this any operator, not specific to Vodafone) should concentrate in enhancing their services, instead of creating walled gardens and locking out handsets... It's not their business. We know voice is still the big money making, data is not even close - and most of data is actually "SMS".

So, c'mon. Enough of limits. Enough of walled gardens. The 6GB plans is a great step in this direction. The mobile cards are great steps in this direction. But those "smart devices" (Nokia Symbian and Windows Mobile) still suffer...

Thanks. You see, there's a reason why I am really working to leave Vodafone and port my number to Telecom. Some people working at Vodafone think we are a bunch of idiots.

When I got my Treo 750v it was one of the pre-production models. I had a meeting with Palm and the Device Manager at Vodafone, when I asked about HSDPA - since the European launch had a promise to have HSDPA upgrade later.

I was told it was coming in January this year.

In February I contacted the Product Manager (who no longer works at Vodafone) and he told me HSDPA was delayed, to be included in the Windows Mobile 6 upgrade.

I contacted the current Product Manager a couple of weeks ago, and here is what he repied to me:

"We are currently testing WM6 for the TREO 750v we hope to have this available before August, there are no plans to roll out the update to HSDPA given the directives from Palm. Not sure why you would have been told otherwise, sorry for any confusion."

After this I had other runs with this person.

So, obviously, someone at Vodafone New Zealand thinks I (and other readers) are good enough to be lied to. I actually developed some "hate/love" feeling towards Vodafone since I had contact with this guy.

I hate being called a liar, when I know I am not the one lying.

Yes. You need to install a patch, then run a program on startup to enable HSDPA. It works.

freitasm: Now, this is really neat. I hope Vodafone doesn't remove this feature from their version of Windows Mobile 6 for the Palm Treo 750v:

You can control your voice mail playback on the screen, using the directional pad. It works really well with the Vodafone New Zealand voice mail system.

How is that different to what was already in the WM5 version? (speeddial/show voicemail buttons)
