I gave up waiting and followed the steps on WPCentral to get 8.1.

I had to change my carrier code for the phone but everything seems to work fine on spark/telecom. Updates to bluetooth also mean i can sync my fitbit.

Change the CSC to NZComm from NZTEL or NZVOD and download from 2degrees. That should work.

Thanks, changing the CSC to the 2 Degrees one sounds like a good plan.
Are there any implications to being on another network's ROM? Eg. Is there a chance of messaging or MMS breaking? Or is it likely to just be a different splash screen when you boot the phone?

2degrees phones are unlocked to work on any network. Changing the CSC won't break anything. As far as I am aware it is a straight Samsung Ativ S update, no other stuff added.
