old3eyes: It has go good specs but I seems to remember reading last week that the price was going to be about US$650 making it about $1100 + here. For Windows Phone the apps are important and still way behind everyone else..

That is the big thing as well as having basic stuff like gapless playback which the likes of iOS and Android have had since god was a teenager. The apps are important but also making sure that rudimentary features that other smartphone OS's have is even more important because it'll be those features that'll get the bums in seats.

Normally I'd agree, but not in the case of WP. One thing MS have got right is their requirement for the minimum specs a device must have in order for it to run WP. The OS experience does not vary between handsets, or not enough for it to be a problem.

Wade: The secret source is in developers recreating their iOS & Android apps for windows store, there is not enough momentum yet, i'm confident it will come the question is when, in the meantime I'm not willing to be a early adopter who has to wait for functionality that is already here and now on other platforms

There is still the Surface phone to come....

Do you think they'll build a Surface phone? I wouldn't be surprised that MS get out of the phone business.....again. WP10 will be make or break in my opinion.

Yep, Never say never. Though that article was talking about android apps not Android OS which is what I figured your original post was referring to.

Did Google turn up to the announcement as predicted in that article?

I think the pricing puts a lot of these products out of reach and I guess that affects market share.

As much as I would like the new Lumia phone along with the new Dock, my "in real life" option is still a surface pro tethered to an iPhone.

Although the 950/950XL look very appealing, I've had quite a few "flagship" (albeit Android) phones over the years and I just can't justify purchasing another.

So given I'm going to move away from the Android camp, it'll either be a 550 or 640 for me.

Hope you have a good source of apps. It's the one thing that is stopping me from going to Windows phone plus the terrible Keyboard..

You could say the same for Apple then as their developers don't do apps for windows cause iFans not to switch to win phone.. Maybe with this new system that Microsoft is developing with Win 10 phone allowing easy porting of Android apps to Windows this hopefully will change..

Nathan. Any ideas of NZ availability and who might carry it?? I assume it will be about NZ$1100 based on a Ozzy price of A$901

Well, yes. I have tried using third party Youtube apps on a previous windows phone. It was ok. Hangouts was a definite one that i missed. Gmail, not a biggie. Google Keep was missed (but iOS just got it so I cant complain too much). I bet Google Photos is not available on Windows.

Snapchat is another one that I did miss not having. The app community is getting better in Windows no doubt, but I think once Google starts to release native apps for Windows Phone, there might be more people who want to switch over to Windows Phone

Look around for a second-hand 830. I picked one up for $400 and am really happy with it. Far better specs than the 550 or 640.

The native mail app works seamlessly with Gmail so I don't understand the comment there.

However I agree the native Calendar app is junk which is why I use OneCalendar hooked into my Google account. The two play very nicely together and any changes on my PC's calendar or my tablet's calendar are immediately pushed out to the phone, and vice-versa.

YouTube works fine on Windows Phone as does Google Drive but I've now switched to OneDrive since upgrading my PC and tablet to Windows 10. It never crashes whereas Google Drive sometimes did. The native photos app on WP does everything I need so I don't see a problem there either.

I really hope they do, it would fit like a glove into the product lineup, Lumia is not Surface and if it were intended to be it would surely be branded and styled as per Surface, Surface Pro, Surface Book so if i were a betting man I'd be confident that there will be something to plug the gap.

Intel Atom X3/5/7/CoreM are right there and one would assume it should actually able to run as a full desktop in continuum mode, the 950 would be crippled by comparison being limited to W10 apps only. Most exec's could probably live quite happily with a Core M powered phone docked into a workstation assuming full windows support and this would be the future growth i guess for surface phone

Don't get me wrong I would love to see how well i could run my life from a 950XL but there is no way I can justify spending $1k+ to find out
