I called Mobilefonerepair and they had no idea what I was on about!

Anyway, I've got it going, but it seems pretty slow. I never get more than the first icon of the data-speed graph on the phone showing up. Anyone know if this is normal?

Ben.

Trying to connect 6385 via IR for data calls to Orange network in Aus, just doesn't happen. Dealer had shiny new 6385, shiny new laptop and shiny new XP and guess what, doesn't happen. Anyone know what the upgraded software version is which seems to enable the modem over Ir to work. Software version can be found by entering *#837#

Current software on mine is V A100V0400.nep

Mine is showing:
V A100V0405.nep, 23-04-03

Came with that version from the shop (in New Zealand here). Not sure how you would go about getting an upgrade in Aus.

Have you tried all the init strings mentioned above?

Cheers,
Ben

Init string +crm=1 ..... is used for Nokia 6385 3G Packet Data Modem, or CDMA 1X, the one I am trying to set up is to use purely as Nokia 6385 Data Fax Modem or CSD. I had suspected a software upgrade was required however I tried the same laptop installation on a friends 6385 with software version the same as mine and connected through Optus (pure Telstra resale), connected immediately, no problems. Tried mine immediately afterwards (at this time roaming on Telstra), and guess what, no chance, data call failed.

I am beginning to suspect either an Orange network glitch or both myself and the dealer have dud phones. I believe the ....405 software version is much more reliable than the ......400 version, but who out there is going to tell the truth, any more experiences/feedback greatly appreciated.

Hey Ziggy, I got the same problem, I have a Palm M130, and a Nokia 6385, and have I been filling support requests at Orange.net.au, requests and Nokia and requests at Palm? Yes I damn have, and all 3 companies have no idea what the hell is going on, Orange do not seem to know what the hell a QNC is,... Surprise?. Nokia told me to contact Orange or download the GSM Modem Drivers for Windows?!@%$,... Surprise? And Palm told me hardly anything at all except something like 'Ring Nokia'?... Surprise?

So after all that I still have no idea what is going on, I have the identical version to you, and yes... once upon a time, I have no idea how, the modem dialed up a modem connection. But for testing purposes I had the phone dial my house number which is obviously not a PPP connection.

I have setup 2 Nokia connections on the Palm... one called Nokia QNC and one called Nokia Dialup, when I set the Nokia QNC connection to 57,600 auto flow, AT+CRM=0;CSO=12 it does attempt to make a QNConnect... but it fails because I have no login/pass details from Orange to make it work... because as I said earlier they don't even know what a QNC is... how handy? hmm idiots. I also tried setting the Nokia Dialup connection to 57,600 auto flow, and NO STRINGS, but... this did not make a connection, (Nokia Support told me to try this), so I removed the battery and rebooted the phone, and tried again at a lower speed as told to do by the Nokia support... Still no connection. It seems the only time that I managed to make a dialup from the Palm was a complete and utter fluke and to this day the Palm is still unconnected and will not connect to the net in QNC, 2G, 3G, Dialup or any other conceivable mode whatsoever.

Oh well, all I can say is 'Go Nokia'.

I have spent 1 whole week on this researching and testing, and still NOTHING. Someone please help me find out what is going on here?

Michael.

Somehow this is looking very much like "Orange", (who us? they say). Some little incompatibility which of course they do not have permission to divulge, and which they will fix and pretend it always was.

Am having a little session with "the dealer" next week, connecting via cable rather than IR, and my suspicion is I will get the same old flukey connections, then convinced from our end that it is not "our problem" I guess we can get together and ask "Orange" to show us one of these things working, which they will not be able to do.

I was told in June that the Nokia phone on Orange was to have a software upgrade in "six weeks", that hasn't happened yet but being the suspicious type my guess is that the upgrade to the Orange network to communicate with the upgrade to the Nokia will magically fix the problems, which as Nokia and Orange have told us in countless conversations must be somewhat related to shoesize, cos it sure as hell isn't their problem.

Will let you know ASAP

OK, some more information on the Nokia 6385 connect via Orange to an ISP or sending a fax.

After multitudes of hours resetting Dial Up Network Connections, calling Orange, being dumped to Nokia, being sent off to my ISP and almost allowing Compaq to cop the rap, we moved in a different direction.

My Orange dealer (oh so helpful when held at knifepoint), ordered a nice new Nokia 6385 for himself and invited me (at my insistence) to come on down to his shop and we would together, like long lost friends, get a connection happening.

Unfortunately, neither his shiny new phone, nor my almost new and already checked by Nokia phone, could manage a connection. Not on my laptop nor his shiny new laptop, not with my Win98, nor his WinXP. So I got a friends also new laptop with Win2000 and guess what, nothing again.

Then, just for fun, I got hold of a customers Nokia 6385 connected to the Optus network, loaded with the 400 software as is the Orange phone. Tried a connection, straight in, no problems. Tried again, worked again, tried mine on Orange, no connection.

Starting to look like Orange (I know they will take some convincing, but it has to be a possibility, or the dealer and I have dud phones, but then mine was checked, maybe the checker falsified the report, but then it could be Orange)

OK, so now my friend with the new laptop and Win2000 gets a nice new Nokia 6385 on the Telstra network, loaded with 405 software. After almost one attempt it inexplicably connected to my ISP, it also inexpicably was able to send a fax and ring a phone, unreal.

Went back to the dealer, he couldn't connect his, dropped the Telstra Nokia 6385 on the IrDa connection on his laptop (having changed nothing, no restart computer, no turn off/on phone, zilch) and again the inexplicable, connected faultlessly.

Looking like Orange, what do ya reckon.

So today, 4hrs of Orange technical service later, changing every damn setting on phone and laptop, more calls to Nokia, suggestion ISP had a problem (funny Telstra 6385 and Optus 6385 coped) and explaining to Orange that the phone in Data mode does not even successfully make the call (ie it doesn't even get to the ISP or telephony device at the other end) they have forwarded it on to their "engineering services".

Got a call not long after, they will have a solution tomorrow, maybe. Let us hope.

OMG Excellent.

Thanks Zaggy I got your message. I almost gave up on all that cause noone seemed to care, all the orange people just kept telling me that it should be working. Stupid asses.

Oh well, I hope they ring you, there was something you said in your message... i'll have to reply about that but I dunno how yet, heh, i'll see what happens.

They did reply today, nothing definitive yet, but they did reply. Their "engineering services" are just taking a little time to respond to their "technical services", but I have a promise they ring me on Monday with a progress report. Sorry for being cynical, but I reckon they might just "fix" the problem, ring me back, put me through a few hoops and bingo somehow it will work, they will not be able to explain it and it must have been because I changed my shoes. Then again, they might fess up. Will let you know.

Wanna reply direct, just click on my email, not on "compose reply".

Orange rang me on Monday as promised, and guess what? Guess where the problem is? No, not the phone, no not the laptop, no not the dial up setup, no not the ISP.

They have informed me thet their engineers had spent quite some hours trying to establish a connection via IrDA through a Nokia 6385, and could not. As this method works without traume on Optus (with the same phone software) and Telstra (with later software) then they have admitted that it is a problem with their network. They cannot give a timeframe in which the problem will be rectified (because I am the only person who wants to use it?). The technical services rep could only suggest I should perhaps buy another phone to solve "the problem".

One would wonder why Telstra, Optus, and obviously Telecom NZ have no problem connecting a Nokia 6385 for data and fax, but not only can Orange not establish the connection, they can not give a timeframe for a resolution of the problem, must be reaaly hard. Perhaps they could put in a quick call to Telstra or Telecom NZ and ask how it is done.

One would wonder how Orange can seriously consider itself a competitive provider to business when you can't send a fax or retrieve an email, don't ya just love technology in the hands of marketing people.

Hey, any more progress?

I sent them another 'Support Request'...
I copied this whole forum, and pasted this whole forum into the support box, then added to it underneath...

I AM STILL, ALONG WITH THE PEOPLE ABOVE ^^^ HAVING 100% FAILURE WITH MY NOKIA 6385 ON THE ORANGE NETWORK? I HAVE CONTACTED NOKIA, FORUMS, PALM, EVERYONE I COULD THINK OF WHO COULD POSSIBLE ASSIST ME WITH THIS... I HAVE ALSO PREVIOUSLY PERFORMED AN 'ASK A QUESTION'. BUT STILL NO SOLUTION... I DID NOT BUY A NOKIA FROM ORANGE WITH INFRARED SO THAT I COULD PRETEND TO CONNECT TO WAP OR AN ISP VIA ORANGE, I AM UNDER A CONTRACT WITH THE PHONE AND I WOULD PRESUME THAT THIS CONSTITUTES A WORKING PHONE, NOT A PHONE THAT ONLY HALF WORKS. I KNOW THAT THERE MAY BE ONLY A FEW PEOPLE WITH THIS PROBLEM, BUT IF YOUR COMPANY ENVISIONS A SOUND FUTURE IN THE GROWTH OF BUSINESS PROVISIONS THEN IT MAY BE BENEFICIAL TO FIX THE DATA FACILITIES, I CANNOT JUST GO AROUND BUYING NEW PHONES WHEN MY OLD ONE DOES NOT WORK AS IT IS MEANT TO.

...

The reply I got was

...

Response (David) - 29/11/2003 12:42 PM
Dear Michael,

Thank you for the update.

I have raised this once again with our Technical team who have escalated the issue to the department which deals specifically with network applications. eg connectivity with IR

As soon as we receive some feedback to your enquiry, I will forward it immediately. Unfortunately, I do not have an expectation for this however I would hope we would have something by mid next week.

Regards

David
Orange Online Support

And as you can see... this reply was received on the 29th of November. And I have not had any replies yet, especially not 'mid next week'... like stated.

This is so damn annoying.

Nothing to date. I am waiting for my latest bill, due tomorrow, whereupon I will send them details of all failed data calls for a refund as promised. Then, we really start complaining to the toothless tigers TIO and ACCC. The bit that says "All phones that are available for use on the Orange network are capable of transmitting fax and data" from their FAQ along with their admission that it does not work with the Nokia 6385, would I think constitute a case of false and misleading advertizing for starters.
