I'm trying to get my Palm m100 to talk to my Nokia 6385 CDMA (Telecom NZ) phone. Infrared works fine for sending contacts and calendar items to phone, but when I try to connect to mobile jetstream, phone doesn't register at all. Telecom and given me special access number for mobile jetstream (#777) and an init string but no go. Palm just times out and displays message saying phone number (#777) is either too long or has invalid characters. I'm going to try connection via serial cable but if anyone has had success with Palms/CDMA phones, I'd love to hear from them.

Have you tried connecting and using the username mobile@jamamobile, password telecom?

Also the init string should be +crm=1;+cso=33

I've found a configuration document for the Nokia 6385 on Telecom's website, but for the Pocket PC. Should not matter, it's the same concept: download PDF from here.

Yes I'm using those logon details and init string but it doesn't even like the dial up number. Nokia support tell me I have to wait till Palm release a phone driver for the 6385. Telecom offer no support for Palm, only pocket pc and laptops. (once again they're marginalising themselves!). I am still trying to track down a null modem adapter so I can connect phone and palm cables together and use serial connection rather than IR. 9 pin adapters seem to be very scarce in NZ. The Palm and Nokia will trade contact data etc, I think the crux of the problem is Nokia are using their own CDMA modem technology in the phone, not the standard one that Qualcomm make.

Only one Telecom phone offers bluetooth (The Ericcson) and thats a costly add-on, not built in. Only the 6385 offers IR so there is not a lot of choice in the Telecom stable for wireless connectivity.

The link between the Palm and the mobile will not influence the connection to the network. IR or cable will be the same. There must be another setting missing somewhere. Will have another look around.

Nokia have released a sw upgrade for 6385 to enable IR Modem to work with Palm. You need to take phone to MFR for upgrade of sw.
Config instructions for any CDMA connections normally available from Telecom Helpdesk 0800 358 423

Hi,

My boss has a 6385 as well, and is looking at buying a Tungsten T Palm. Consequently I am just trying to confirm if someone has actually used this firmware upgrade, and if they have managed to get it to work for surfing on your palm?

Also, any other feedback on the Tungsten T, and surfing etc on it would be great!

Cheers
Shane

Pernod,
Did you have to get the phone updated? Or did it just work?
Any tricks that I can try on my Sony Clie N760c?

Thanks!

I got the phone updated (I didn't even try it without the update sorry). THe update was free as its part of the Nokia service :-)

If you Clie is running the palm OS (which I presume it is) then it should be basically the same.

Download the info for using the the nokia with the pocket pc frome telecom nz as you will need the acces codes to activate the phone from the palm.

Any questions drop me a line :-)

Geeze, you guys are a lot more helpful than Nokia!

Check the useless reply I got from them:

"Thank you for your email.

Please be advised that Nokia do not have drivers for handheld devices -
please refer to PALM for more information at http://www.palm.com/nz/

Support and downloads for the Nokia 6385 can be found at

Where in NZ are you Ben?
I got the phone software updated here in Wellington at a place down lambton quay. I can probably find out their name if thats any help?

There is also a telecom 'mobile data' helpline (although I cant find the number off hand). The guys on there deal in this stuff all the time and were reasonably helpful.

Hey Rossco

I managed to get mine talking - I didn't need the upgrade in the end.

If you're connecting via Mobile Jetstream, just make sure you have a standard IR modem set up with an init string of +crm=1;+cso=33

The connection I have set up uses Windows RAS, and the jetstream login and password.

Cheers,
Ben.
