For exactly the same reason GPS systems offer yearly upgrades. New streets appear, street names change, traffic systems change and destinations change.

You can argue that with a GPS you don't have to upgrade each year but you haven't had to pay upfront for the hardware with a phone.

There is no charge from Nokia to download the latest available maps. The only thing you pay for is the turn by turn navigation.

Any idea how often the maps are updated?  I'm waiting for google maps and nokia maps to update the Lower Hutt area with a new flyover thats in place.

as an aside, something I noticed the other day is if you set a favorite in Nokia Maps or Google Maps, it will also be viewable in the other. Very nifty indeed.

Ok, well I've added my request, thanks to Lower hutt city council for their maps. Now to get it on google maps.

Yes, also available directly from the "Landmarks" app which is included with S60 in the GPS menu area

ah, that might be it.  My E51 runs S60 on it and has landmarks.
