I finally got a chance to get back to this today. I had to let the blood on my forehead dry and the wounds start to heal. :)
I took the ASUS dongle back and bought another one from another supplier (Jaycars) on the proviso I could return it if it didn't work.
Third time lucky. It was an unbranded unit, the package just says "Bluetooth USB dongle". If anyone needs any info on the product number let me know. It uses a CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio) chip and uses IVT Corporation, BlueSoliel software. I still had the Broadcomm stacks installed.
I had to fiddle a little bit to get the phone paired up properly, but it wasn't too much of a problem. I managed to get the phone paired via Ovi suite initially with Ovi initiating the pairing but next time I tried to connect it wouldn't work. I just had to pair the phone to the computer making the pairing request from the phone. It works just as I would expect it to now. The phone connects automatically when Ovi Suite is started.
I didn't have to fuss around uninsintalling Ovi then installing the bluetooth software or anything like that.
It's amazing to think this was so easy when the other two units wouldn't work. Obviously not all Bluetooth is created equal.
Thanks everyone for your help and interest in this matter.
