I am trying to get an E75 to connect to Ovi suite via Bluetooth.  I have tried two different brands of bluetooth dongles without success.  I am using windows XP professional with SP2 and have tried the Dick Smith USB mico bluetooth dongle and the ASUS USB BT-211.

I can pair the computer with the phone using the Bluetooth software in both cases, but Ovi suite and/or Nokia PC suite will not recognise the bluetooth connection.  The "connect via bluetooth" option never becomes available.  I have a bluetooth dongle on another computer which works well with Ovi suite.  It is a Logitech one which came with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  I haven't seen it sold separately.

I have done a fair bit of google searching on the issue without much success.  I have tried uninstalling Ovi suite and the bluetooth software and reinstalling them starting with the bluetooth software first as suggested on one site.

I have tried other drivers, Widcomm, Anycomm etc, however in some cases they appear to be incompatible with the dongle as the computer will not recognise that it has a bluetooth radio.

Can anyone provide me with some leads to fix this issue?  Has anyone tried a particular brand of dongle successfully?  Where did you get it from?

Thanks

Have you created an INCOMING (or SERVER) serial port? Then you configure OVI to use this port.

Delete the pairing between your handset and the PC, then create it again. It should now see a serial port available, and try connecting to it...

Thanks for the reply.

So far as I know I have serial ports 17 and 18 set up, but they show as disconnected and I cannot find a way to connect them.

When I go to the Bluetooth Suite (the software for the ASUS dongle) and choose the phone which is showing as a paired device and do a service discovery it shows 8 services one of which as a serial port for data transfer which shows as disconnected.

If I right click on the serial port option and try to connect, the connection fails with the message "serial port failed to connect to profile".

I am unable to find anywhere on Ovi suite to set it up to connect to a particular port.

I have just taken a look at the the system requirements for Ovi suite and is appears that the ASUS (Altheros) software isn't supported by Ovi.  :(  Can I use some other software with this device?

The INCOMING port on your PC will accept... incoming connections. It means you have to connect FROM your phone, not from your PC.

Have you deleted the partnership and reestablished it again FROM your phone?

You could use the Windows' own Bluetooth stack.

Deleted pairing and initiated pairing from phone, with the same result. The phone and laptop paired without any problems but unable to connect with Ovi and unable to connect the com port for data transfer.  :(

When I look at the system information under the "about Ovi tab" on Ovi suite it shows the miocrosft blutetoth stack as being in use.

On the computer where bluetooth works with Ovi both the Microsoft and Broadcomm stacks are in use.

I have no hair left and the brick wall has blood on it. !!!!!

Do I need the Broadcomm stcks as well.

Have you tried completely uninstalling the phone from the computer and reinstalling it from Ovi Suite?

The following just in case not known - After uninstalling the phone make sure it is also uninstalled from Ovi Suite and not connected by its USB cable; then use phone's bluetooth connectivity menu to make it visible then go to Tools>Options>My Device; if your phone shows there then uninstall it from Ovi Suite. Then Tools>Add New Device and select the Bluetooth option. That has never failed in my experience with a number of phones, different computers/dongles, XP/Vista/Win 7, and both Broadcom and Microsoft stacks. Hide phone from unauthorised devices again.

Are you using Ovi Suite 3?

While not likely a problem for this issue (but maybe for others :-)) have you considered updating SP2 to SP3 (SP2 is no longer supported)?

Also, I think Ovi suite 3 was officially released yesterday?

Hi Mauricio

While version 3 is still shown in the Nokia Beta Lab's web site as a beta, the release version of 3 is what you get now off the normal Ovi Suite download page.  I have been using 3 for quite some time through private Alpha and Beta testing and so can't remember the exact date it actually swapped to the release version but it was about 10 days ago.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Ovi suite and the bluetooth drivers for the dongle.

I can pair the phone with with the computer, but I cannot get the bluetooth option to highlight on Ovi suite to even begin setting the phone up on Ovi suite.  It's as if there is no bluetooth equipped on the computer so far as Ovi is concerned.

I have version 3 of Ovi suite and it is XP with service pack 3.

Any more ideas?

Ovi Suite 3 just greys out the "Use Bluetooth instead" device installation option if it can't see bluetooth on the PC - just as you surmised. Previous versions gave a message along the lines of Bluetooth is turned off or doesn't exist (on the PC that is) so as you can pair the phone with the PC it seems it is most likely an Ovi Suite problem.

With Ovi Suite connectivity problems I have generally found it is best to start again from as clean a position as possible proceeding in an ordered fashion and then installing the phone from Ovi Suite. If you are so inclined then this is how I would go about it.

Important, while you say you have uninstalled and reinstalled Ovi suite and the dongle my experience with Ovi Suite is that randomly uninstalling and reinstalling rarely works so do it all in one ordered session as follows if this is not what you have already done -

Uninstall the dongle drivers in Device Manager under Bluetooth Devices>Drivers and remove the dongle.

Uninstall Ovi Suite ensuring that its support applications listed in Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs are all uninstalled (they being Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver, Nokia Ovi Suite Software Updater and PC Connectivity Solution) - they come embedded with the Ovi Suite installer but they don't necessarily get cleaned out by the uninstaller.

If it is still there delete the Nokia folder in C:\Program Files (assuming you have no other Nokia applications on the PC that are under that folder).

Reboot.

Reinsert the dongle and allow it to do a normal plug and play install - nothing else, don't try to pair the phone, etc. Reinstall Ovi Suite.

Make the phone visible and go to Ovi Suite Tools>Add New Device and see if you can now install the phone.

If you have already performed that ordered process before with no result or it gives no result now, I am at a loss. However, in Control Panel>Bluetooth Configuration under the diagnostics tab I assume the correct dongle is listed, its status is active and it says that the selected device is working correctly?

Hi John,

I'm sure I've done as you suggested at some stage, though since I have tried so many options between the two bluetooth dongles and also trying PC suite as well, it's possible I haven't done it exactly as you described the last time I did the reinstall.  I'll give it a go just as you suggest.

One thing I read somewhere indicated that the bluetooth dongle needed to be installed before Ovi Suite and I wonder if that's where my problems started.

My research shows that this is not an isolated instance with getting Ovi to work with bluetooth, however there doesn't seem to be any good advice on how to fix the problem.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Technofreak.

The only advice I can offer is that when I was using XP I could only ever get BT to work when using Broadcom drivers. Along with the advice John2010 has given above this "should" get things working.

The only XP machine I have here has the Microsoft and Broadcom (Widcomm) stacks on it and Ovi Suite works fine on it so your Broadcom suggestion may be the key.

Thanks for the help and advice, it was all very helpfull and encouraging BUT I've just wasted well over 2 hours.  :(

I started again from scratch and uninstalled everything.

Firstly I had problems installing the Broadcom (Widcom) stacks as the automatic download programme would not recognise the bluetooth device (the ASUS USB BT-211 dongle).  I ended up installing the software for a bluetooth LogiTech keyboard and mouse to get the Widcom stacks installed.

I then installed the software for the ASUS USB BT-211 dongle.  If I just plugged the dongle in, I was asked to use the CD it came with, so I then did as instructed by the ASUS installation info and ran the CD restarted the computer then inserted the dongle.

I installed Ovi suite and then ran it.  The Bluetooth option was still greyed out. :(

I took out the ASUS dongle closed Ovi inserted the LogiTech dongle and restated Ovi. Hey presto the bluetooth option was available.  WTF?

I now have two Bluetooth icons on the system tray one for the Widomm set up and the other called "Bluetoth Suite Tray" for the ASUS set up.

If you run the bluetooth configuration option from the Widcomm icon when the ASUS dongle is installed the device is not recognised.  Even running refresh doesn't help.  I've played around with the ASUS bluetooth configuration previously without success, I haven't even bothered this time.

Opening the system info tab on Ovi suite shows the following:

Detected Bluetooth stacks:
- Microsoft (Version: 5.1.2600, Build: 5512), In use.
- Broadcomm (Version: 5.0.1, Build: 2500), In use.

It's beginning to look like a problem with the ASUS dongle or it's software.  Is there some way of installing this without using the setup software on the ASUS disk?  Is there some generic bluetooth dongle software that might work?

For the time being I'm off to do someting more productive, and have a think about it all.  Why does it have to be so difficult?

I don't know if you have solved the problem or not but I installed a bluetooth dongle ( a cheapish Digitus one with Silicon Wave radio inside) which comes without any installation CD on an XP machine to see if I could get to the usual choose the device type manual installation and so see if there was a generic or other hopeful option as you asked.

No luck though, it insisted on just offering itself as the only available option during a manual install and went off and downloaded its driver.
