Thanks for the comment Technofreak.

I have performed a number of deep uninstalls of all the Nokia components, registry entries, etc with no result.  I have now also tried other Nokia phones and the same issue so it is definitely on this PC and not the N8.

We have a couple of other Win 7 64 bit PC's in the house now so I may try setting up dial up and Nokia Suite connections on one of them with the phone and see if it works - but this machine is the one I use and has all my stuff on so even if works with the others it doesn't really help and leaves me afterwards with the tiresome job of getting all the Nokia stuff off the other machine as it is pretty invasive Frown.

As I have said is not a big deal as this machine is on fixed broadband and spending some dollars for a wireless transceiver on it would be expected to work through the phone with Joikuspot anyway. Is just a puzzle?

I know how you feel.  It bugs me when I can't find/fix the problem even though it's not critical.

I've just been through major grief with my laptop.  It kept rebooting every couple of days or so and was running slow so I did a reformat and reinstall last weekend only to find that it would crash after a restart from hibernation or a normal start but once it finally booted up it was stable except for last night when things would hang and and require a reboot, when I was using Nokia Suite of all things, and then this morning when it wouldn't boot properly at all even from the reinstall CD telling me that it was unable to load some drivers.

Microsoft Help and Support via a Google search suggested one issue might be the Ram.  Took out one block of ram and hey presto it booted up OK but was very slow due to only 194Mb of Ram.  I gave the edge connectors a clean and reinstalled the Ram and so far so good.  It's probably too early to say fixed, but certainly promising.

I remember having issues with my Palm Desktop installation a few years ago which from memory was resolved when I reinstalled various components in a different order.

Software and computers can be very frustrating and time consuming.

There is three programmes to uninstall.  Two which are obviously Nokia (Ovi) PC suite programmes.  The other one is called PC Connectivity Solution.  This is where I suspect your problem might lie if you haven't removed this one as well.

Yes, have always removed all three. As well as those a package of drivers gets loaded as well, Windows Driver Package - Nokia. I don't know if my deep uninstalls have grabbed all of those drivers but being Nokia's drivers for their phones one assumes they are not the problem unless they do not support Win 7 64 bit yet.

I suspect it is a driver (or maybe a security) issue and while lots of things can cause RAS 633 errors I can replicate it on the XP notebook (which works fine) if I allocate an incorrect driver to the phone modem.

Interestingly on the Win 7 64 bit machine I can interrogate the N8 modem no problem at all  with AT commands - it is just when one sets up a dial up internet connection that it fails.
One comfort is that if one Googles "RAS 633" one gets zillions of hits - but unfortunately no killer solutions Frown
