I've managed to break my OVI installation (I believe Samsung Kies did it) and now I'm unable to use N8 as a modem. Does anyone know if the Modem can be reinstalled / configured separately or do I need to uninstall and reinstall OVI?

Note: Kies has already been uninstalled.

My N8 is the same on a Windows 7 64 bit machine for both bluetooth and USB tethering as a dial up modem. I do not have wireless on that machine so I cannot comment on Joikuspot.  I don't know for sure if it has always been that way or not as I hardly ever use the N8 as a modem on that machine, but I am reasonably sure it did. If so I am not sure if it came about through an Ovi (now Nokia) suite update or a security update for Win 7. It does work fine on my notebook though (BT, USB, Joikuspot) which is still Windows XP as I have some needed legacy software on it so it is not the phone itself.

I have been through the whole uninstall all Nokia software, cleaning out the registry (both manual attempts and Revo), etc and reinstall a number of times and also tried reverting to older versions of Ovi Suite and PC Suite with no cure. It also occured before the Anna update - also since the issue arose the phone software has been updated (in fact also reinstalled several times).

It smells to me as being a driver or a Win 7 security issue. It seems we are not alone and not just Nokia and N8's, nor just recent but have never seen a definitive solution for any of them.

Please let me know if you find a solution.

EDIT: I've done repairs also with no result.

I have a parallel import N8 (I wanted a black one as it, to me, was the least ugly option), so I'm planning to take this to the Nokie Service Centre for a "fix" (I assume this is a ROM flash to Vodafone image). If that doesn't work, I'll then reset my laptop to "factory default" and reinstall the Nokia Suite.

ah, silly me, the Nokia Suite repair did work, but I needed to restart the PC. Once I restarted and connected the phone the USB drivers installed and it was alive again. I shall not install competiting phone vendors desktop software together in future.

Ah, lucky you Smile. Maybe I'll have yet another try in a day or so when I get home again.

What is the PC's operating system and what version of Nokia Suite ?

Sorry I couldn't offer more than this. Do you have a Paralel import? If so, once I get my spare phone back from friends I'll have Nokia "fix" my imported N8 and post and changes here.

No problem lyonrouge.

My N8 is a Vodafone one - my last phone, an E52 was a parallel import, but in the N8's case the Vodafone package offer fitted my exact needs and worked out better. The Vodafone influence in it is very unobtrusive, brief display of the Vodafone logo when starting and closing and a Vodafone icon buried down in amongst all the other stuff (so not pushed at the user) which accesses their live stuff, etc but which I never use.

Vodafone NZ also got the Anna update out with the very first release of those from Nokia so that was much appreciated and hopefully they will manage the same with Belle. Haven't seen the 25.xx minor update but that not important so no complaint.

As you have genuine kit, have you contacted VF for support with the issue you are having?

No I haven't done so - I know Nokia are aware it is an issue for some though. Main reason I haven't progressed it being that the Win 7 64 bit machine is on a fixed broadband connection so not having the phone as a modem on it is really not an issue (and if in the rare occasion it goes down the phone works fine with my XP notebook). After the cleanups and PC OS checks I did with no result I had really just left it to see if it maybe magically cured itself when Belle arrives.

But I am back home again now so will do another complete  clean up of all Nokia stuff on the machine and reinstall and see if any result this time. If no result I'll just leave it but whichever way it turns out I'll let you know the result.

No luck.

Seems to me it is a 64 bit driver or a security issue - I should mention that in the past I have checked through all services, processes, changed ports used by modem, etc for possible port blocking or conflict with no result either.

As it is not very important on the Win 7 64 bit machine I will just leave it and see what may change in the future. If ever necessary and no solution in the meantime the easiest solution would be for me to just get a wireless transceiver for it to link to the phone.

The cause of my issue was the Samsung Kies desktop application, I had to uninstall that, repair Nokia Suite, restart and it was operational. Have you installed any other desktop application that has modem support?

Not that I am aware of - I have had a run through them all to check (but will do so again). There is also no hardware modem in the computer either. I have also checked to see that there are no processes that start with the machine that may cause a com's issue.

Lots of similar issues on the internet for all kinds of devices and modems but apart for the simple causes of error I have never seen any examples of solutions beyond for those.

In the past I've found that to get a successful reinstall of OVI suite you very often need to uninstall all Nokia (Ovi) software including things like the connectivity stuff using the remove programmes option.
