juha: Hopping in on an old thread, but I take it that nobody's had the Belle upgrade via Nokia Suite yet? I can see it on Nokia's servers, for NZ product codes, but it's not showing up on Suite or in Software Updater.

Guess I'll have to manually flash the phone again.

Mine came via Nokia Suite.  Though I have an imported E7.

It's a couple of weeks since I got the update and generally so far so good, and over all, a nicer experience than Anna.   SmileSmileSmile

Having the one screen for all apps is nice. The widgets are a nice option to have and the ability to add and remove shortcuts and widgets just by holding your finger on the screen is great.

Being able to add extra screens is also good.

The calendar is nicer to use and has a nicer appearance.  You have a + button allowing you to add an event directly without having to open a menu, you can add an event location directly from the Maps app which is quite neat.

The + button in the calendart is one example of buttons being added in various places allowing direct access rather than having to open a menu to do something.

The email widgets are a big improvement on the old email info boxes, allowing you to scroll within the box to preview the emails that you want to open, then you can open them directly by tapping on the desired email.

I may have mentioned this earlier, the pull done screen which allows access to things like; open apps, and hot keys for switching On/Off mobile data, bluetooth, WLAN and Silent mode is very useful, though I would really like to see the (Flight Mode) Offline option in there as well as I would use this several times per day.

I do have a few grizzles.

One oddity is the clock screen saver no longer rotates when the phone in in landscape mode.  I put the phone in a holder in the car in landscape mode and the clock is always sideways on. Frown

I prefer the old battery state indicator to new version.  The older one gave a better indication on the amount of charge in the battery as there are more divisions on the old version.

The's a couple of things missing in the Belle upgrade, the internet radio app is missing though this is available for free from the Nokia Store and easily added back.

One thing that is a real shame though is the Remote Drive function is missing altogether with no way to add it back though there is a paid app that does something similar.  You have to wonder why things like this are removed especially without notifying what's missing.  It hasn't been a biggie for me though there have been some who have updated to find out that a feature they rely upon has been removed. If they'd know they would have stuck with the old version.

I discovered yesterday that the Custom Dictionary app was removed during the upgrade.  I don't use it often but it's very handy to edit the dictionary used for predictive text. How often have you typed a wrong word that gets added to the directory and then pops up all the time when you don't want it? Custom Dictionary allows you to get rid of these words.  I originally added it to my old 5800 and put it on the E7.  It works well even though during the install you get a warning that it may not work properly as it's not for Symbian 3.  It's not on the Nokia Store but still available from the Nokia Beta Labs site.  It wasn't a major issue to re install just a niggle that it was removed.

Speaking of the Nokia Beta Labs site, it's a great place to find and try out new apps they are experimenting with, some go on to commercial production, some don't.

Did 2 degrees and Telecom sell the N8? I'm unsure what the NZ product codes other than vodafone there could be?

I guess we're getting closer. Anyone want to go back to Anna?

Telecom didn't sell the N8 despite saying they were going to.  Not sure about 2 Degrees.

The update will not show up on your phone.  You need to check via Nokia Suite, make sure you have the latest version of Nokia Suite first before doing the update.

Quite happy with Belle don't want to go back to Anna.

Like belle so far on the C7, if i could change the homescreen icons to only 3 wide and bigger like the apps screen i would be a most happy camper.

I realise it won't show up on my phone, my product code is the vodafone one, which is showing as waiting to be approved. I was just surprised at all the other codes, I thought it was only sold by Vodafone.

There was discussion here regarding the Vodafone variant, http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=23&topicid=100738

s
pecifically this comment

"That leaves just the operator variants outstanding which means for NZ the only N8 update outstanding is the Vodafone one 059C7R0 (which is what I have so am still waiting) which has been released for some time to Vodafone for testing. Going by JohnR's comments on Vodafone's own forum it sounds like they aren't in much of a hurry testing it"

You may have  to resort to flashing it your self to the Belle version.

I did the Belle update on my wife's N8. She discovered something I hadn't noticed and that is that you cannot select upper case for one letter and switch back to lower case automatically when using the 9 pad keyboard. I don't normally use the 9 pad now.

You can do it using the Qwerty layout but not with the 9 pad. You used to have this option with Anna but it has disappeared with Belle. It' a real pity as it's a useful function and now a real pain for someone using the 9 pad. Especially when they have been used to using the phone where the text automatically returned to lower case . Now you need to select upper case then reselect lower case manually.

Hopefully Nokia can address this issue.

News at last!

John on the Vodafone forum reports that Belle should be finished testing by the end of the week (barring problems)
Then we just wait for Nokia to load it on thier servers. (he can't give a time for that)
