I will enter into this debate from another angle. I love Nokia phones as I believe they seem to hold a reception signal where others don't. With Nokia comes Windows. A very simple OS. Played with iphones and other than more apps, they seem the same.

???a low end lumia is a windows phone.....

the lumia 520 at the current prices of $122 (boxing day) or $180'ish (the warehouse, other places on special) makes for a very good phone for the price.

I have tried WP, woefully inadequate for my use at the present time. Needs to stick around and improve though, lord knows I don't want an iOS/Android dichotomy, having a third player is good for consumers.

out of interest, could you use IOS or is that too limited also?

I think that there are always going to be 'power users' for which both IOS and WP will never be the right solution.

For so many others with simple needs (calling/texting, web, email, perhaps also twitter, instagram, etc) the WP is more than adequate and works very well at that low price point with snappy and responsive devices and consistent UI/performance.

howabout this - do you trust tim cook, google or microsoft with your data/life?

when you exist on google environment every micron of your life is logged onto google like it or not. i think apple is less invasive and microsoft the least?

at least that's what i feel ... ?

I wont switch to windows phone for the same reason I wont switch to iphone.

I am a type 1 Diabetic and the app I use to manage my condition is not available for either of those phones.
Of course there are similar apps but the one I use is leaps and bounds ahead of any alternatives.
The app is so good I have become almost completely reliant on it so now I am locked to android unless someone else comes up with an alternative app that is as good.

Never bothered with iphone (the phone itself is not manly enough).

My first Android was HTC magic.

Tried Lumia 920 (thanks to Telecom). I went back to Android because I felt the OS at the time is still in early stages.

In this respect I'd say they are all essentially the same.

If you really are worried about who knows what about your mobile life and habits. ... don't use them. (Meego would probably be the best option)
But fact is your carrier/provided knows all this stuff from the moment you put their SIM card in. However it seems only now we're worried that higher powers are collating it. .....

Finch: Hi guys.

We know that Apple and Android are the two biggest players in the market and then there is the little cousin down near the bottom, Windows Phone. I have wanted to try Windows Phone for about a month or so now. I am not a big "hack my phone to install custom roms" kind of guy, but I do like owning the latest and greatest even though it is probably more powerful than what I actually need. I wont be buying one of the current Lumia devices because in the first quarter of next year we all know the new phones get announced. I will probably get the newest Lumia then, hopefully something like the 1520's specs, in a smaller screen.

Im going a bit off topic now, but I was wondering why more people wont try Windows Phone? The most common reason seems to be the app store, but there must be more to it than that. This might turn into a Apple Vs Android Vs WP debate and that probably will end up badly, so please try and keep it clean :D

I'll admit to having a bias against "embrace and extend" proven monopolists like Microsoft. They have crippled my choice of software on PCs for almost 30 years and it is only the new smartphone / tablet era that has allowed choice to flourish.

So I won't be buying or recommending any Microsoft products just yet. I'm enjoying choice too much.

Though I also appreciate the REAL enemy of choice is the vast consumer market who don't want to learn more than one thing.....and will avoid even that if possible because....really...they don't want to learn anything at all.

But still won't be buying any Windows phones. I have too many others to choose from.

Wow guys great debate.

Someone mentioned a page or 2 back that all the young people (teens) think that having an Iphone makes you "cool". Nobody would want to own a Windows Phone at that age because nobody would of heard of it and you may be excluded in the apps the Iphone users are using. Everyone is playing a certain game on there Iphones, this one guy in the class has a windows phone and cant play that game, he isn't going to want to keep the Windows Phone because he is being excluded.

Also somebody raised another good point and that is the cheap Android phones (-$200??) are quite bad and once people have a bad experience with them they think Apple is the only alternative.

I think Microsoft is slowly gaining a foot in the door, more apps are coming to the store (which was always going to happen overtime) now what they need is to get some kind of exclusive releases or sign a deal so they get an app in their store a month before Apple/Android.

I wonder how many Xbox One owners own a Windows phone? That could be somewhere Microsoft could target.

Maybe Microsoft needs to market itself to be "cool" or for younger people?

This probably sounds like im fighting in Microsofts corner, im not really just adding to the debate :)

One obvious answer is that "trying" a new smartphone platform is a major purchase. I'm not going to buy a new Windows phone just to try it out -- they won't let me return it if I "don't like it". None of my friends have one so I can't try out theirs. So I'll stick with what I know (Android).

As far as I see it for Phones under $300 Windows Phones are the best phones to get from your typical retail store. Sadly there is a lot of stigma about owning anything other than an Android device. This is especially seen in Windows 8 tablets (not even RT) where people would go for an Android tablet at double the price of the Windows tablets - even though they want to use said tablet as a laptop replacement.

I've worked in an electronics retail store for a few years and know from experience how terrible some of the cheap Android phones are - having a minimum specification on your device that manufacturers have to adhere too definitely works in Microsoft's favor.

Seems to be less of a learning curve from going to Android - however once people choose a smartphone they rarely change operating systems to anything but iPhones.

Having more advertising in New Zealand would probably help awareness a bit. I really enjoy the Nokia adverts over in America - although my sense of humor is probably not the norm :P

Even things like this

While not amusing - would introduce the tiles into the brains of the general populace and decrease the scariness of a new platform.

Full Disclosure : I'm slightly jaded towards Android devices due to all the support I've given friends and family over the years and the hours I've spent trying to customize cheap android devices to suit me.
