yeps, looks like someone's goofed up. perhaps they do both the europe and nam versions but ended up mixing up both bands in the spec listing?

scottjpalmer: The Telecom subsidy isn't worth it, sign your soul away for years for $150 or so off, meh

That may be true, depends who I go with...

Vodafone, if I want the 3GB data plan, I have to go On-Account, I would choose the 'Starter 600' plan for $29.95, which has a 12 month term...and as I want data, I might as well then signup for the 24 month term 'Broadband 3GB' plan at $69.95...total monthly cost of roughly $100-$110

The data plan also includes a $300 device subsidy...which I would not need as buying the mobile and broadband on the mobile so a datacard or vodem not required, but I would not le them just forgoe that subsidy...they could give me the $300 in credit instead.

Telecom...well you make a valid point...as their new XT data plans do not require signing up for a term (unlike Vodafones)...so it may all come down to how much the subsidy is...

That said, this time round, I do not want a network branded mobile, so firmware...I want a clean mobile...so I may have no choice but to pay outright and buy from other than a network.

For some unknown reason I have a voice in my head telling me I want to switch to Telecom and also telling me I want to buy it from Telecom . . .

What does the E series have over the N series these days? SIP the same? MfE the same? Anything?

Yes I'm being lazy and the Nokia comparator wouldn't be pretty on the E71, how does the N85 compare to the N97? Is that an indicator of likely price? (Ouch)

If you were to use the E71 as an indicator of price....looking at the US site, its selling for $359 US, and Telecom sell it for $930 NZ...

Thats slightly more than 2.5 times more expensive,,,

That would indicate, that the N97, which is selling for $699 US on the US site, Telecom would sell for around $1750!

Using the N85 as a comparison is worse...on the US site, its selling for $400 US, and Telecom sell it for $1530...

Thats almost 3 times more expensive...

That would indicate, Telecom would sell the N97 for around $2000!

Ouch.

It's amazing how one review can change your opinion of a device so much :-)

I think that just saved me a lot of money! :-)

Meh

Does not change anything for me.

I have read far too many reviews of the N97, I'm all reviwed out...a few negative, but mostly they have been postive.

There is always going to be a difference of opinion, but it does not change the fact that I want it for my own reasons...
- Its looks great, symetrical
- Its a Nokia, so can use software like SportsTracker etc
- It has 32GB built in, with ability to add a further 32GB using a memory card
- The Home Screen is brilliant
- It has a keyboard and touch screen

Of course it can be debated the touch screen is resistive, and the keyboard has keys put in strange places, and is only 3 rows deep...but as this will be my very first smartphone, I will not notice the difference over the others, having never owned or used them before.

Just a matter of opinion, nothing more.

Some options so far:

Non NZ sites: (hence higher postage costs and warranty issues)
Nokia USA $1102 ($700 US) - 850mhz HSDPA (best suited for Telecom)
Plemix $1341
SelectGSM $1344
Amazon $1102 ($700 US) - 850mhz HSDPA (best suied for Telecom)
Portagadgets $1367

NZ sites: (hence cheaper postage and warrantys etc covered by NZ law)
Zillion $1350
Phones Direct $1630
Trademe $1699

All except the Nokia USA shop offer 900mhz versions, best suited for Vodafone.
All in NZ dollars

The Amazon one would end up the same price as the Zillion one with shipping and allowing for the GST which you may or may not get stung.

I am not even looking overseas. First, no warranty. Second, who knows who you are really dealing with. Third, taxes.

For the sake of a saving of $100 or so dollars, I would rather buy here.

I agree, but I am keeping all options open.

Unfortunaley, at this point, there are not many New Zealand retailers yet offering the N97.

Anyone found any other NZ retailers offering the N97?

Here you go!

Cool Mobile in Auckland City in the Imax complex. A bit dodge in terms of service though.
