So the logical question then would be how stable are Zune devices?  I don't actually know anyone that has one to ask...

I've never heard bad things about them (except the horrible colour and naming a feature "squirting") but sadly they've never been available in NZ.  Pretty much doomed to failure on the NZ market then eh?

Hence why I don't know anyone :)  But surely someone on GZ has imported one?

Main thing is though:  Does it ever have issues and need resets etc?

Im not too worried about the hardware side of things.  But if it hasn't had to be reset once, and it is the same underlying tech as WP7 then thats a good sign :)

All smartphones require resetting every now and then.  How often depend on many things.  For example, my BlackBerry 9700 used to lock up about once a month, now its about every two weeks.  The difference between then and now is now i am using a lot more apps on the device.

My advise is to pick good mobile OEMs, like HTC, Samsung, SE etc... that has a track record of making reliable hardware and good software support.

My Motorola Milestone used to reset itself when unlocking it... My Windows Mobile 6.5 device never had this kind of problem.

I agree: the odd reset is not a huge issue.  But if you have to do it too often it is very frustrating

Remember: if an app isn't running, it isn't running.  For the moment, WP7 has no concept of background applications like WM6.  You're either running one app, or none (oversimplification of course - the OS itself likely runs some apps itself).

And Microsoft isn't even allowing OEMs apart from the trusted names to make them.  Sony Ericsson, LG, HTC, Motorola, Toshiba, Samsung, Dell (off the top of my head).  "Bob's discount phones" couldn't get a license if they tried.

Remember though: it's not like you lose your stuff. Applications are "frozen" and a tombstone is created with the app state. Good developers will be able to restore the application to the exact state where it was when it was "sent to background".

Obviously, not many apps require this kind of treatment.

Yup.  I was responding to the implication that WP7 stability could be affected by applications- I doubt it could be, much the same as iPhone's invulnerability to instability caused by apps.

Right, you might be to young to remember early WM devices from "Bob's discount phones" like the Eten, Imate (HTC was the OEM), BenQ, Acer.  Even the respectable Motorola made awful WM phones, Palm as well.  It took many years for HTC to final bring out decent WM phones, they and HP to the lesser extent, are the only OEMs that have made decent WM phones.  The rest was rubbish.

technicaljoe: A somewhat pathetic launch line-up...

I will hold off upgrade until Telecom release HTC HD7.
For me, that means limping along with my semi broken HTC Magic.

Samsung Galaxy S is very nice. I'm really enjoying mine.

The Omnia 7 does look nice - but sadly Vodafone only (or Telecom only in urban areas - 900/1900/2100MHz 3G).

If only Telecom hadn't picked the LG Optimus of all devices to launch with.
