Me too, it beggars belief that the Nokia has released the local variants but Vodafone's has a fault.

It beggars belief that there is any need for a Vodafone variant to start with, or for Telecom for that matter. My Malaysian E7 works quite nicely thanks on XT and it's had the Belle update for several weeks now.

I have XP on my computer I don't need a special variant of XP or the internet browser to connect to Xtra or Slingshot or TelstraClear etc. Granted a mobile phone is a little more complex, but I do wonder sometimes.

Perhaps the Vodafone logo was the wrong shade of red :-( ?

Instead of our usual sourcing direct from overseas or from a parallel importer for Nokia (and those phones worked fine and got prompt updates) tried to do the right thing this time with this N8 by purchasing it from Vodafone.

But doing so has turned into a thoroughly bad job so any future Nokia phone will be ex o'seas or a parallel import again and even if not Nokia it very likely won't be from Vodafone unless Nokia NZ/Australia and Vodafone prove somehow in the future that they have actually got their act together.

One of the problems New Zealand consumers face is the New Zealand market is infinitely small on the world scale. It doesn't matter what product you look at be it cars, motorbikes, TVs, or mobile phones. We've all heard the stories about New Zealand's total annual consumption of a product being made before morning tea on one days production. Then you add in operator variants to the mobile phone equation and you end up with even smaller numbers. You have to wonder why manufacturers even bother with New Zealand variants.

It's no wonder we end up at the end of the queue when it comes to update time. The sooner we go away from operator variants the better.

I do wonder how many people are waiting for this update? 10 in NZ?

My brother is not bothered, everytime at their house all their computers are requesting updates, they ignore them.

If it weren't for the camera he would be perfectly happy with a simple phone.

I see on the VF forum you have indicated it should be a quick fix, so am looking forward for that. Thanks for the feedback.

Have wondered the same as Mudguard says as to how many actually go to the bother of updating the firmware or even know about it.

Sadly it seems that Nokia have also saddled their windows phones with piles of variants and carrier product codes so I wonder how the updates management of those will fare including the ongoing commitment of the carriers to applying the updates to phones they have sold?

Yeah, it takes a while.
Mines eating up the battery at a great rate at the moment, read somewhere that that happens becaause its still doing a lot of updating / indexing in the background. Hope thats right and it settles, better leave it plugged in overnight.

Just be aware some of the flash new widgets will help chew thru the battery (and data) if you have them set up on one of your home screens. I cannot remember now which one I had on one of my home screens now but I think it was the Weather one but there are several others as well like Places Nearby, Facebook and Twitter which also access the web. When the widget is selected on a home screen the app is effectively on all the time and is regularly going on line to update the widget.

Firstly have a look and see what apps are open by unlocking the phone then holding down the physical menu button. If you cannot see anything there that might be the culprit try the following.

Pull down the notification screen (or blind) The notification screen is one of the new features on Belle and is activated by swiping down from the top of the screen.

Tap on the Mobile network tab, assuming you're using mobile data and not WiFi, this should take you to another screen which will have "connection manager" at the very top left of the screen. Tap on the link that has the two way data arrow beside it e.g. "telecom content" in my case. At the bottom of the next page will show what app is accessing the data.

Close that app down. If it's something like an email account you might want to check how often it's going online checking for new mail. Open the account, tap the right tab at bottom of the screen choose settings, choose account if necessary then choose sync frequency and set to a lesser frequency that suits your needs. You can access the same setting page from the Settings Tab, Application settings, Mail, etc.

Also I have found that going out of an app like Maps without actually exiting will keep the data connection open, it's not necessarily using data but the data connection symbol will be showing.

Have had it installed on my N8 for a couple of days now with no problems and putting aside the need to have to update to Belle in order to run some newer apps and app updates it is for me a worthwhile improvement itself. So thanks Nokia NZ and VF for finally getting around to getting it released (sorry, couldn't resist the "finally" but is meant without malice

).

I have always had quite a quick and reliable GPS integrated receiver lock with the N8; it may be my imagination but this seems a bit quicker still now for me?

Just have to wait for the N8 version of FP1 and of the MS apps upcoming release now, hopefully no big delay this time for this remote corner of the world.
