sorry...may or may not be on the topic..but anything better than N95???- loved it for 2 yrs..currently problems with it..nedd to replace it with N95 or any suggestions on anything better ??samsung

RV, my review might help you decide whether this phone is right for you. Okay, I've had this baby for about a week now and here are some thoughts:

Pros:

- Astonishingly pretty screen
- Very, very fast already on default, Hungarian firmware (will update to latest firmware at some point). The first phone that I've ever used which doesn't hav any hiccups at all
- Good looking phone overall and good construction. Highly responsive screen
- Beautiful performance as a music player via a good set of headphones. Great dynamic range and low sounds that would have sounded muffled on my N95 8 GB sound brilliant on here. One pitfall connected with that is you probably wouldn't want to record you music at too low a bitrate, for you'd also hear the imperfections clearly
- Amazing GPS perfomance. Almost instant lockon even without A-GPS.
- Excellent WIFI performance

Cons:

- Battery life range from average to awful. Probably will improve with a few more charge cycles and new firmware.
- Some minor but frankly brain-dead design decisions. One example is how you cannot adjust the strength of the vibrating motor separately between when th phone rings and when it provides feedback when typing on the resistive screen. Another is how low the various speakers' default volumes are - go to http://samsungi8910omnia.com/forum/samsung-i8910-omnia-hd-problems-help/how-to-improve-the-loudness-of-mp4-divx-movies-and-audio-playback/ to discover how to adjust the volume on your phone right away if you decide to buy it. It's essential.
- The phone is a tad bit slippery and hard to hold. Samsung should probably have put in a couple o rubbery grips somewhere.

My overall impressions of this phone are very positive. No, it's not as revolutionary as Blackberries were for mobile e-mail and Nokia's N95 was for being the first great overall highly performing smartphone. But if you want a cellphone that is backed up by brilliant hardware and able to provide a beautiful and pleasurable daily usage experience, this is the way to go. It doesn't have as many apps as the Iphone but most of the Iphone gaps are gimmicks only anyway. But it those things are important to you, the Iphone is still king.

This phone is better than the N95, no doubt there (owned an N95 from first release, then N95 8GB, then N82, so I know the N-Series).

In fact, if you can live without a keyboard its straight up better than the N97 too (I have an N97 as well for a few weeks courtesy of Nokia).

No battery life issues for me, lasts my 17-19 hour days with true push email on all day, so no complaints in that area from me (but then mine was V7 firmware to begin with, now the most recent Italian firmware, so its better than earlier firmwares in that regard - you also need to turn packet data to "when needed" and video sharing to "off" to preserve battery).

Oh NZtechfreak is definitely right about this kicking the pants off the N series. Comparing the GPS chip of the Samsung with the ones on the N95 or N97 (I've tested out the latter) is like comparing a Hyundai with a Ferrari; music playing performance is vastly superior on the Samsung as well.

And, to be fair, even when I describe the battery performance as occasionally awful, it still lasts a full day with pretty heavy usage. The N97 also seems incredibly slow and sluggish compared to the Samsung. Like the man above said, unless you must have a keyboard and, I'd probably add, the in-call quality that only Nokia can deliver (the I8910 isn't bad; just that no one can beat Nokia in that regard) I would choose the i8910 over the N97 any day of the week.

Fair comment about the call quality, its fine, but nothing tops Nokia there.

Incidentally this just to hand at samsungi8910omnia.com - it is possible to enable the FM-Transmitter! Full instructions at a post there, if you need an FM-Transmitter...

Thank you very much guys....
I am leaning more towards Samsung..but whats in NZ- i8910/i900 or i910?? or any other Omnia? and any suggestions where to buy from Parrell import/trademe/or Vodafone stores- or simply buy another N95- stick with what I know...though need "upgrade"

Will have a go and post back, it comes from one of the most reliable members at samsungi8910omnia.com though, so I expect that it will work (again its a hacked-handset only deal though).

EDIT: Maybe spoke too soon, sounds like its still not clear whether the hardware is there as nobody has yet got it to actually transmit sound...

helo guys...I do not really know what to get...Omnia i8910 or N95/N97????Do I stick with n series which I love or try something different ..Samsung..and if it is Omnia i8910...are all omnia same ie..is i8910 from Honk kong same as any other one???Part of me tells me to stick with n95....bu perhaps after 2 years ..may need to move on.....need some help please .....so hard to decide..n97.......or i890..???!!!!!.

I'm fully decided on the i8910, HOWEVER depending on the price of the Hero I might go there, and because there is a apparent revision of the i8910 on the 1st of August I'm holding back and waiting for that before I make the purchase. I must admit though at $1269 for the i8910 its a bloody steal!

I think the August 'revision' will be only a software thing, and I'm presuming it will be available to older i8910s via firmware update. If I didn't already have mine though I would definitely wait until then too... just to be sure...

The N-Series is based on the Symbian OS, as is the i8910, so there is really no reason to be overly attached to them as such (and I'm a fan of the N-Series, before they started to look dated hardware-wise in comparison with the competition at any rate...).

I have an N97 and an i8910 right now, and I would say that unless you MUST have a hardware keypad, go for the i8910 without a doubt.

I've had the 8910 for a while now and can confirm that it was well worth it. Again, battery can be better but in terms of sheer usability, style and sheer quality of the hardware, it beats the N97 hands down unless (as NZtechfreak says) you must have a hardware keyboard. And this is coming from someone who has used and touched the N97.

Quick updates for today:

- Facebook Italian official Samsung blog announce new firmware available soon (they gave the announcement for the current Italian firmware, so I expect this is completely genuine). So far they claim further battery and speed optimisation, and sounds like the 3D taskmanager previewed for this handset will be there too

- They also announce the FM-Transmitter is there and will be activated in a future firmware update (perhaps not this next one, since they haven't mentioned it thusfar with respect to that firmware)

- Quickoffice now has a purchasable version with editing for S60v5 (also for N97 and 5800)

- There is a Roadsync update available to us for free now (make sure to register at their website so you can activate the software again post-software update), it adds a few nice UI upgrades, but most importantly Google Calender and Contact sync!
