Microsoft announced this morning Windows Phone 7 multitasking, full IE9 on mobile, Twitter and full Windows Live Skydrive cloud storage integration - that's just the top of the cream.

I wonder how many are actually on the "I won't ever even try it because it's a Microsoft product".

I won't ever even try it because it's not an android. (once you have spent truckloads of money on android market, moving to different ecosystem is almost impossible - the same reason why most people stay with iOS)

windows phone 7 has to offer something extraordinary to tempt me

Awesome. They've been saying for a little while that copy/paste is on the way too. Multitasking and copy/paste are probably two of the biggest matters which have prevented, or at least slowed, adoption of this platform.

The other big hurdle is the lack of support for user removable flash memory and the way MS format embedded MicroSD cards so they can't be used in any other device. For a lot of people this will neither be here or there, but there'll be a similar (if not greater) amount for who this is a deal breaker - they'll go for Android every time.

I would replace a windows 6.5 phone with Windows phone 7 anyday a complete change in the user expirence, you should go to a shop and have a play with one before you say your don't like it.

Harvey Normans in Wellington had one that we could try out and I was impressed so far but I would not start using it completly in the corperate until SP1 comes out.

The key to this working will be MS letting Nokia dictate what they need their hardware to be able to do... in order to get customers on board. (like removable storage)

And a plethora of usefulll and usable free apps like the android market has.

I only got to use the HTC Trophy which for what windows use to be was a great phone to play with.

Most people that will use these are not geeks and as long as they provide the service they want (email, internet) to a respectiable degree they will use them.

But as you see new hardware is coming so if you don't like the hand set at least have a try of the OS and wait for the new hardware.

Windows Mobile 6.5 (like android) used to run on a variety of odd hardware. Basically OEM could create anything and if they made a driver for it, then the OS would run.

To avoid problems as this, Microsoft came up with "chassis" which are minimum requirements for OEMs to provide plus a set of guidelines to what not to put in there, otherwise the OS won't run.

You will see the HTC Trophy is very different in terms of functionality.

As for Symbian... I do try all the handsets I can from time to time, exactly to avoid this "I haven't used and I don't like" approach. The last I tried was last year with one of the flagship Nokia E series handset, and the experience was bad - from the lacking messaging support to the old style user interface.

i have a sony vivaz that i got as a prize. its a fairly modern version of the symbian OS, i believe. After a week of using the phone i threw it in a drawer and went back to using my old Palm Treo 750 with Windows Mobile 6.0. The experience on the Vivaz was pretty horrible overall. The RoadSync app for email was painful to use and very unintuitive. Trying to use apps on the 'internet' was painful - and i'm a very techy guy, i'd hate to see a non-techy person struggle with it. The updates to the phone are few and far-between. the only redeeming feature on the phone was the awesome camera/video quality. i believe that Sony has ditched the symbian now for android.

EDIT: oh, the other big thing that bugged me about the Vivaz was that i couldnt always use the same onscreen keyboards in different apps...
