crackrdbycracku: I have been to two phone shops so far, on carrier affiliated and one not (I'm not going to name names), and both times the sales staff advised me to avoid Win Phone 8 in favour of Android or iOS.

Their reasons were that Win Phone is not very customisable and that it is 'hard to use' but basically it was a case of 'I don't like it, but if you want to buy a Windows Phone that is up to you'.

I find this really strange as by all accounts, here and some well respected reviews, the recent Nokia phones are the best you can buy at the $400 to $600 price bracket.

Is this just a case of Windows not marketing right? or does anybody think there is something else going on here?

This has been a commonly reported issue throughout the world. Sales reps just aren't being trained properly on Windows Phone so they think its very difficult to sell and they simply don't want to help people who buy them and then might have questions about it.

I think its mostly just due to the fact that people got used to iOS and Android phones and having to learn a 3rd UI is too difficult for sales reps.

Tbh I never listen to them anyway for any electronics product. Always do your own research and find the best product BEFORE walking into the store.

FWIW the sales drones will be on close to minimum wage, they've probably never used or even turned on and tried a Windows Phone so they're going to sell what they're familiar with, what they use, what their boss told them to sell or what ever handset has the biggest kickback/rebate/bonus in it for them

sadly since they never tried a Windows Phone they don't know how fast and cool the UI is

I'm probably upgrading to Windows Phone 8 soon.

It is actually a real shame the sales people are not able to be more help, they are usually carrying phones over the $1000 mark and they work in the phone industry so really more effort should be made.

I do a lot of research but there are always little, trivial things like; "So, am I able to have a dedicated button to turn Wifi on and off and a dedicated button on the front page to call home so I don't have to do a contact search?". This sort of stuff isn't covered in reviews and of course there is a way but it is exactly the kind of thing it would take two seconds to show me in the store and half an hour to figure out at home.

Oh well, rant over.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

If you have questions just post here. You can definitely have buttons on the home screen to enable/disable stuff there's an app called connectivity shortcuts. You can also pin contacts to your home screen for easy access to their details. Eg I have my girlfriend pinned to my home screen

Any other questions just fire away

Got two random questions to fire away myself.
can you select what folders or photos are used for the live tile of photos?
Also I haven't looked into windows 8 too much, just had a play with the old lady's. But does windows 8 support USB OTG?
I'm getting tired of Android and think my next phone will be a windows 8 phone. Slowly starting to read these threads and do some research.

I look for WP8 devices every time I walk into a shop where phones are sold and there's generally none or only one phone present. DSE last weekend - One fake HTC 8S on the wall, two Lumia 520s in the cabinet in boxes, and 50 Androids on the wall, plus the obligatory iPhone on a pedestal of its own.

Vodafone yesterday... also one fake HTC 8S, one fake Lumia 520, nothing else but androids and of course the iPhone and Galaxys in their own display.

On the other hand, go to the Noel Leeming phones page and it's a just a huge advert for the Galaxy S4. Go into the shops and it's a big table of Apples, followed by a long table of Samsungs.. then there was a brief appearance of that little Lumia 620 display shoved off to the back (what happened to the 620 anyway??) with the advertising screen off and the phone without power. The do usually have some Lumias at the last table, all facing to the rear, and often with a Lumia 800 or N9 alongside at a silly price. And of course the 920 was also off and not powering on, presumably without power. This is typical whenever I go for a look.

This is a year and a half down the road for Nokia and 2.5 for Windows Phone. It's just pathetic. I blame the local marketing execs for both companies; it's their job after all.

Maybe they are working on developing 'underground cool'? Remember those black Amex cards that were all the rage a few years ago but were really hard to get? They were cool because they were hard to get. Maybe there should be a waiting list, like Google Glass?

MS don't make marketing blunders, right?

Unfortunately, I've always felt Microsoft has a really poor presence here in NZ. Apart from Tech Ed (which is only aimed at IT professionals not at consumers) there's really not much other events/news. I do my bit whenever I can by telling family/friends about Windows Phones and also I change the ugly as HTC default wallpaper in all the stores I visit to the Bing one to make it more appealing. But the underlying problem is that the sales reps just don't want to touch the platform.

Johnk: The photos used for the live tile are from your "Favourites" list of photos. You can add/remove photos from this list in the Photos hub.
I don't believe WP8 supports USB OTG, but it does do mass storage mode when plugged into the PC. This is just from a quick search online though so I'm not 100% sure

Well, to give credit where credit is due, one of the staff in our local Telecom shop (Kerikeri) was quite knowledgeable about WP8, and they had a Lumia 520, a 920 and a Samsung Ativ on display. All were real phones that you could play with, and all were powered up.

Contrast this to the local Vodafone shop, where they refuse to stock any WP8 devices because they say they've had so much trouble with them.

I am having some major issues setting up Outlook.com on my 720, and am hoping someone can throw some light on what I am doing wrong.

When I first registered my Windows account, I followed the suggestions and created a Live.com address, and then created an Outlook alias. (Should have guessed something was odd when if offered outlook.co.nz rather than .com)

Anyways...I can log into Outlook on my desktop, but if I try and add an Outlook account - it says it can't locate the server. - Logging in using Outlook user name

If I add an Outlook email A/C on WP8 and log in using live.com details, it takes me to Live.com - and any emails I send are from there rather than the option from the desktop of choosing the Live.com or Outlook email address.

Am I doing something wrong?

Should I reset my Microsoft Account and start from scratch?

Apologies if this post is in the wrong area - but I gathered that as it is a General WP8 forum, this would be the appropriate area.

Try using a server name of m.hotmail.com on the phone Outlook email setup
