This is an interesting discussion!

I currently have a cheap android which has lasted well (3 years+) but its speed is annoying me more and more. I had been thinking of replacing it (along with my 4yo netbook) with a cheap non-smart phone plus a small tablet. (I usually have a laptop within arm's reach if I need some real screen size or functionality.) On the other hand, a Lumia 520 and a Windows tablet might replace everything. Thoughts? (apologies if this is too far off topic...)

Chromebooks are out! People have the choice for them too. And they are cheaper than Windows laptops. (nobody buys them still though)

Also one could say Google is a monopoly too because everyone is buying Android products unless you buy apple.

If you don't like monopolies then don't support the monopolies in their field.
eg: don't support Google, either online or in mobile phones, don't support Microsoft on desktop, Valve for PC game distribution etc.

I do agree though, monopolies and duopolies are lame. I like it when tech companies fight against each other to give the best experience to the end user :D

Actually, Chromebooks are the best sellers in the Notebooks category on Amazon.

Having a look on amazon now and reading the reviews it seems like people are really enjoying them. I could definitely see them filling a empty space in the market for those who only need a browser and a cheap laptop though.

In New Zealand however I've known nobody who owns them, or wants them, or has bought them - even though I have worked in electronics retailing for a few years - i've not seen any of them leave the shelves. That said - the best selling chromebook and the one with the most positive reviews I have not seen in New Zealand stores for a price less than that of $500 - something I doubt the average consumer would lean towards when they can get a laptop that can run their native applications better for the same price. (even if they don't use those applications anymore, or if Office 365 suits their needs better etc) I guess the lack of advertising in New Zealand probably hurts a bit too.

I have a Windows 8 Laptop, an iMac with OSX 10.9. I have a windows Surface and Nexus7, I have been using Linux for years and very involved with Ubuntu since 4.10. I currently run Ubuntu on my iMac using VMWare, Windows monopoly? No

Lumia 520 has been $180 or so for the past month, even $122 at Harvey Norman recently. That is probably the best bang for buck from any Smartphone in the world right now. I read today that the Lumia 520 is 30% of all Windows Phone owners in the world.

The 520 is an amazing phone, spec wise nothing really comes close for the same money. For the price range I think Nokia have a winner. Feels great in the hand and the build quality is also good. Camera isn't stunning but does a good job, no lag and runs really smooth.

The live tiles look great once you've pinned a few apps and moved/re-sized a few. Some of the apps have some really good live tiles with a snapshot of the game/app and an update of what's currently happening.

I like the toast notifications, similar to Android at the top too. Multi tasking is really good, just hold down the back button and it brings up the multiple apps that are running. IE10 is the best browser I've used on a phone so far.

Some people will probably accuse me of being a fan boy, but as I mentioned in another post I've been a long time Android user. I'll still root/rom and fix Android phones as I enjoy doing that. I'll continue to use both, but my main phone will be a WP phone at this point in time.

That is by default (and always has been IMO) because other than Apple, none of the alternatives (including ALL the thousands of versions of Linux) offer what Microsoft and Apple provide in the way of OS'es for the end user. They fail miserably at being as good as, let alone better than Windows for the vast majority of computer users.

There have been numerous alternatives including the hardware (mainly Linux) offered over the 25+ years 'proudly claiming they're a REAL alternative' to windows and that Windows will no longer be the only option for end users of computers, wildly optimistic predictions that X company, educational institution, local government, government, etc, are ditching windows for a 'better' OS, only to fade away as yet another failed 'experiment' in 'ditching Microsfoft/Windows as the OS of choice.

And before you ask I have and DO use Linux. But it's not an alternative to Windows, and never will be IMO.

I would however I have three issues:

1) A bad experience with the Nokia 920 and constantly chasing them up to receive a refund after being shafted around with Telelogistics claiming that 'nothing is wrong' and kept sending me the phone and each time it continued freezing. Nokia need to take responsibility for their products instead of offloading it onto third parties and absolving themselves of all responsibilities.

2) I'm really deeply in bed with iCloud already and it would take a lot for me to get to leave iCloud unless Microsoft/Nokia can deliver a comparable experience that I get on my iPhone.

3) Stop stalling on new releases - we're sitting at December 2014 and yet where is 1520 on offer.

my 80 year old father has one and he found it himself, everyone told him to buy a tablet so he did but found the screen way to small for his eyes and he hated the touchscreen keyboard so he took it back.and saw the chrome book for around 300 and he has never looked back, he loves it. he can read the news daily, look up his email and he has worked out the google equivalent to Skype .

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I actually got this information from someone in the industry. Those cheap Android devices still on retail and running old Android 2.1 aren't very capable of running new software. As discussed before there's a lot of peer pressure around and if you can't run some app that other people are running then the whole experience is ruined.

Mauricio not all are rubbish and they will do the basics required of a smartphone and it is a good introduction into the smartphone market for little outlay. I agree that some selling Froyo etc are taking the P but you can't judge all of them on that. Lets remember that not all people buying cheap android are kids I Have a number of people I know that started on cheap androids, some still have them and they are quite happy, if not they buy up and thats the beauity of having a low end offering.

agreed it is a cheap phone for what you get so I'm wrong there but is it a lose leader or just going to be the norm ??

If you look at that phone being 30% of WP sales it would indicate there is a good size market for cheaper phones or the other offerings are too expensive!

Nokia has been picking up good market share gains with the likes of the 520, WP8 works very well on just 520mb of Ram so lost cost lower spec phones give a good user experience.

That does not mean there are not good Android low spec offerings, there is.
