This tool will install the official, RTM Windows Phone 7.8 update today, right now. It's easy. Just click Install 7.8, then select the desired language packages. Then wait.

I had trouble at first with the "disconnect internet" trick, but found it was an issue with the internet connection i was using (may have been a timeing issue with the connection to the servers etc)

When i tried again at home, i was able to get it to allow the update three times (as there were three updates) by waiting for 6 seconds prior to disconnecting the wireless on my laptop. Also i had the phone in flight mode.

Loving the extra accent colours, and the smaller live tiles. i am also enjoying feeling like the screen is much bigger due to the black bars down the side being now more fully used.

That's the problem... According to Microsoft's own rules you shouldn't ever have three updates in the queue, unless you never checked for updates before. They always said customers would always receive every second update even if the telco had blocked one.

Obviously Microsoft got around this by saying some updates were released for specific models.

There were huge group discussions about the updating process on Windows Phone when I was a Microsoft MVP and there seems things never changed...

This morning I successfully managed to up date my HTC Radar phone, using the disconnect method.

Yesterday and this morning I tried the disconnect method without any success? Then I came up with the idea - "What if I reboot my phone first?" - which I did and then the disconnect method worked as expected.

The phone carried out 3 updates and I had to use the disconnect method between all updates.

Update were 8779, 8783 & 8858.

Yay I finally managed to get the update for my Lumia 800 (2degrees sim). After about 10 tries at the disconnect method it finally worked (by clicking update and then disconnecting after about 6 seconds). It's kind of silly that this trickery is needed though

Just to be clear guys, what you're doing with this disconnect method is put your phone to the front of the queue

you're phone would've still got the update, but this one is staged out over 3 weeks

i hear you that you think this is crazy trickery, but there is a method to this 'madness' ;)

Annoyingly if you are using a Mac with your windows phone you can't use this trick...

How is battery life on 7.8 for everyone? I find that mine seems to be draining faster since the upgrade. But it may just be because I am using it more

i actually find my phone is lasting longer, but i think i killed a couple of tiles from the start menu which may be helping in that area

I haven't seen my WiFi stay on, so I don't think I am suffering the same issues as described in that article, but it is an interesting read. I might remove a few live tiles, to see if there is any improvement.

I think I'll start with the unofficial Powershop one... :P

Are you able to elaborate? I'm not sure I understand the need to stage an update over three weeks for the, what, two hundred WP devices in New Zealand.

Just pushed 7.8 to my OEM Mozart! I had to push 2 other updates first, over the last few days. Can't remember the version numbers. The first two updates required a fairly short moment before disconnecting, whilst 7.8 was the hardest to push and required maybe 5-6 seconds before disconnecting. I don't know whether this would apply to anyone else though, whether it depends on your connection speed and pure luck.

Looking forward to the new Start Screen, even if it's mostly an aesthetic update it'll be nice for a change

Litespeed: Compass is STILL poked.

I'd put together a longer answer about the issues with the Compass in the Southern Hemisphere in a separate thread - Windows Phone 7 compass not pointing north (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=6&topicid=106085&page_no=1#659978)

TL;DR Try my Compass Bearing App (http://windowsphone.com/s?appid=97b39bf8-c24f-4125-9d45-444ab01fbc53). It does the magnetic declination calculation independently of the phone.

Incidentally, I've tried a few WP8 handsets in retail stores. On the 820 at least the issue appears to be resolved. Plus the gyro sensor gives much more stable compass readings when using the Motion API.

so i used this tool to update a lumia 800 and a lumia 900 and it worked great - much easier than doing the cable pull dance...

i did however hard-reset my phone today, just cause i felt like cleaning it out, and when i reconnected it to Zune i got offered another update, entitled "NOKIA update for Windows Phone". I guess this update wasnt provisioned using the "SevenEighter" tool.
