freitasm: I was going to say this discussion has been pretty good so far.

I don't see anyone trashing other OS around these pages. the fact there's an awful lot of crap apps on iOS (as mentioned by Alasta, an iOS user) is known. The fact there's a number of devices running older Android versions, causing some problems with not all apps running in all devices is also known.

Pointing this out is not trashing the ecosystem. For people answering the question "why won't you try Windows Phone" these are good points that should be made clear. Someone coming from Android 2.3 to Windows Phone 8 will have a completely different experience as someone coming from Android 4.4 to Windows Phone 8 or iOS 7.

All those points are valid points.

I wasn't talking about the apps just the references to older versions or OS on Android and them being rubbish under a certain value. I don't retract that either as its an old argument constantly brought up. I think the source I provided showed that my post on the comment that a large majority was old OS was valid.

" trashing" is subjective maybe I should have used "putting down" or "condescending" however its well known that people will justify their choices by putting down! other offerings its human nature.

There must be something that can be done. For instance, Harvey Norman is selling LG G2 directly, without telco involvement.

I'm not sure but I think when The Warehouse was selling the Lumia 720 it was a parallel import deal.

So yeah, there are retailers with the scale to make it happen.

Ideally it shouldn't be a parallel imported deal, but one made directly with the OEM. This would provide easier warranty coverage and local patches (see the SMS Timezone problems imported Windows Phone have).

With all the interest free deals offered etc I imagine it could be lucrative if the brand is marketed right.

WP8 should be a serious contender in the mobile marketplace, for the average consumer I would hazard a guess it more than provides, the low end handsets rival the mid level handsets of its key competitors and it's high end while not class leading hold their own. Unfortunately the flagship WP8 handsets generally lag a bit behind the flagship iOS and aos devices as far as wow factor.

I really want to try a 1020,1520 or the upcoming 1820 to see how WP8 has matured since my 920 days, I fear I will still favour my HTC One though 😛😛

You're right the opportunity is there, and has been used in the past (more recently the white 1020 through Harvey Norman only)

We'll always look to support the local network operators.

The big question is how much are the local network operators willing to support Nokia mainly for the high end devices. Low to mid range nokia seems to be doing well for sure.

I think it's going to be a long fight. But I think Windows Phone has a future because iOS and Android seem to sit at opposite ends of a spectrum in terms of device range and os openness, that isn't a criticism by the way both have advantages. The point is that this leaves enough space for Windows Phone to grow somewhere in between.

A flagship phone at the $1000 mark is always going to be a big ask as everyone is trying to make headlines.

That is a good question. Some of the local operators have showed very poor support for Nokia in the past. For this reason two of my last three phones have been imported.

I think there is a good case for Nokia to sell direct to the public or via retailers like DSE, Noel Leeming etc, without Telco support.

Didn't read all the posts, so perhaps this has all been covered. main reason - when I first looked at Windows Phone it was missing a whole bunch of important stuff. This was back in 2011 when I was using Nokia/Symbian.

Then I took a look again at one of the early Nokia Lumia phones which was an improvement. The interface was nice and smooth, even if it was as ugly as sin, but I still wasn't impressed with the features overall. By that time the Nokia N9 was out which seemed much nicer to me.

Now I'm using a Sony Xperia SP (android) and to change I'd want something better than what I have now in the same price range (sub $400 parallel import). I'm using Linux Desktop and Macbook Pro at home so for my ideal Mobile OS, I'd like as much of the following as possible.

No dependence on a windows pc - while I have access to one, it isn't mine and I don't want to be dependant on it for phone updates and file transfer.
Support for file transfer to/from Mac and Linux - some sort of SSH based solution might be ideal, rather than plugging in USB, but open minded to other options.
Good compatibility with the document formats I'm using e.g. OpenDocument format used by LibreOffice. Perhaps read only might be enough.
Good gmail app available.
For music I'd want to see good Spotify and Soundcloud apps.
It would be good to be able to sync firefox bookmarks with other devices as I'm using firefox on Linux and Mac as well as the work pc.

It's amazing how many people refer to the N9 in situations like this.

In fact your description of your ideal Mobile OS describes the Meego OS in the N9 almost to a T.

My work phone has changed from a blackberry to a WP. I would have been very happy with it if my personal phone wasn't an S4.

i had a iphone 3g the day it came out, then about 2.5 years later got a iphone 4, had that for about 10 months then sold it and bought a windows phone 8 htc 8s (think thats the model), i had that for about 6 months. it was a nice looking phone, i liked the OS, seemed fast, loved the live tiles. however the apps werent there, only westpac banking app at the time (im not with westpac) and lots of other apps missing. so i sold it and got a s3. love it, android is nice, i hate the update system (still on 4.2 on my s3) but the os is nice and the apps are there, the market place is huge.

plus i live in a google world, gmail, gdrive, google keep etc. didnt want to use skydrive, outlook etc (i know u dont really need to, but still still).

and google excites me way more, theres so much more things going on like google glass (gimmick now sure) but ill be upgrading to a padfone soon, waiting to see the announcement on the next one, but might pickup a a86 padfone infinity.
