Cool, so how do I update? I assume it will just automatically start doing it next time I'm connected to Wifi?

could you tell us what those things you don't like are. Maybe they are addressed in an upcoming OS update.

Not to hijack the thread but...
Lack of file browser
Lack of bluetooth functionality (eg sharing files, photos, etc via bluetooth)
No equivalent of a notification dropdown, i know there are live tiles, but not always enough details and requires smaller tiles to fit all apps on top of screen for notifications
No VPN connectivity
and a few more things

Dont get me wrong, i understand microsoft needs to make itself stand out from android and iOS, but for me it doesn't have what I want yet.
And i'd like to add that I do appreciate that the features it does have a re very polished

Pretty much all of that is coming in 8.1

Also is the Lumia 520 from Telecom going to get black update this year?

Ah but will my budget 520 see that update? And is there any real eta on it?

Until then, sadly the 520 takes the back seat

Ah, also will more APIs be opened up? Like Keyboard APIs so we can have 3rd party keyboards like swiftkey and swype?

According to Microsoft all current windows phone 8 phones will see windows 8.1, however based on how long it takes the carriers to add bloat and actually make the updates available to the end user I wouldn't expect to get 8.1 on the 520 for months after it's actually released.

e.g it's been about 1.5 months now for a minor update (black/gdr3) and the Telecom 520 still hasn't got anything.
So for a major update like 8.1 you would probably be lucky to get it before the end of the year depending on when it is finalized and released.

WP 8.1 is getting swype builtin.

Suggest you check out here for a list of stuff that's coming, quite a bit of stuff leaking from the sdk:
http://www.wpcentral.com/windows-phone-81-features

there are also a few things missing like cortana and the action centre.

there is a Developer Preview Programme exactly like there was with GDR3 so you can get it on Day 1
