RV, I am in same boat as you. Not sure if I should go with i8000 or i8910. I have had Symbian previously. The only things putting me off the i8910 are the weight and the UI - S60v5 is not the best in the UI. Samsung have done a good job "hiding" the WinMo interface on the i8000. There is a good video review done by PocketNow.com. I think I am leaning towards the i8000 at the moment despite it not having quite as good hardware spec as the i8910. I guess it depends on what you really want/need in a phone. Both are good phones. I will be overseas shortly and will check them out properly in a Samsung shop before I decide.

Yeah also looking at the N900. I'm keen on the media side of the i8910, as my phone is my camera. The N900 is also hefty at 180g, but very promising.... waiting to hear some comparisons once its out, nztechfreak...

nztechfreak is another member here.

The demo's for the n900 look sweet, fantastic web browsing, if it had the AMOLED display and a bigger battery then id be in for sure.

Can't help you with win mo vs symbian as ive only every had an n95.

just take the plunge, I did it on the basis of what I've read from various forums.
You won't regret it. Either that or just play the waiting game for months to come.

I had bought a phone holder off ebay after reading a review of it on samsungi8910omnia and it arrived today.I am quite pleased with it, proper fitting and good build quality. Also tried video recording from car and it was perfect.

Now i need to buy a protective case and a car charger for it.Has anyone tried that Skniomi or Zagg invisble shield ?

For car charger I got one at Harvey Norman, it came with a wall charger for Micro USB as well for $20 (which is great now that Micro USB is the standard for all phone chargers). Great deal. Don't buy a car charger from Ebay, its what I did, and like many others it died within a week (there is a thread at samsungi8910omnia.com - if you're an owner you should check that forum out).

I got a Universal car holder from Trademe for like $11 or something that works perfectly - holds the phone without blocking access to the charger port and doesn't press the camera shutter/screen off buttons.

Regarding WinMo and Symbian - I like both. You'll need a bit more patient with WinMo though, because you'll need to tweak things to make it run well and be finger friendly. Its browser (Opera Mobile 9.7) is out of sight better than the S60 browser, so if that is a massive priority for you then its worth a look (it also makes waiting for the N900 more attractive), but if things like the photography and media player are important then the i8910 has a definite edge.

I just got a decent sized tax return, so I will definitely be getting an N900 as soon as humanly possible for those who decide to wait and get some feedback. I wonder if those in Auckland would be keen for a meet up at some point after I have the N900?

Just get the nz open maps (google for it), there are two versions of their mapsets - only one will work properly in Garmin and I can't remember which off the top of my head.

i will have another crack at the open source maps after work. i tried it last night but couldnt get it to work.

i tried to update the firmware via the bundled samsung application but it came up with a message that the phone wasn't compatible. is this due to me having the most up to date firmware for the region or something else?

thanks for the info, got it working with the opensource maps eventually. i'm not too fussed on flashing to the latest firmware and i'm happy to wait as i'm able to update through the samsung pc studio but when i try to update i get a message saying pc studio doesn't support the connected model. is this because i'm up to date or is there a problem?

Just means no update available for the country of origin for your handset. When the new Italian one comes out (looking like this week) I think it'll be well worth flashing the phone. Honestly, don't wait until it rolls out to your handset, it could be ages and the handset really is a different beast on later firmwares...
