how much interaction with the device (N8) is needed to get this operational, how many menus and clicks does it take to get the access point online?

Does N8 support gold old fashioned "Dial-up Modem" mode? (this was good because you could set as authorised and never have to touch the phone to establish a connection).

Just observed that this appears to be a third pary application, does Nokia not support this functioanlity OOB?

You run the JoikuSpot application and click a button to enable the wifi hotspot and you can connect via any wifi device. So very few clicks.

Have you left it running full time (I believe that N8 is multi-tasking)? I suspect it would eat battery but would be convenient.

I've only used it a few times but it works fine for the couple of hour sessions I used. I've also used the same program on a Nokia N900 and it worked well. Yes it drains the battery fairly quickly. Using the equivalent feature on the Android 2.2 phones does too though.

Symbian still supports dial-up networking via Bluetooth. The N8 also supports connecting via a cable without Ovi Suite if you choose 'Connect to Internet' when plugging it in.

The full version on Joikuspot connects with a couple of taps. The lite version takes a couple more.

I think I'll take the plunge. I've played the O/S vs vendor lack of upgrade game (HTC/WM) in the past, so I'll try something a little more proprietary this time and see if the upgrade path is better (inspite of being abandoned on my 6120 classic, whereby it does not support self-signed certificates).

hmmm, that's a good question, praying that Exchange server is integrated (and not anther redition of Mail for Exchange), will it work with self-signed certificates?

The full version of Joiku also supports encryption which means if you were to leave on for an extended period of time mean others cannot hook onto your Joiku WiFi.

I've used it on my 5800 amd it works very well. I can recommend it. It takes a few minute to do the initial setup and few minutes extra if you're using encryption. The lastest version 3.1 boasts one click WiFi tethering, better battery life, and data speed and consumption meters.

If I were to need it on for long periods I would plug the charger (wall or car) into the phone to extend the battery life, remembering you have several metres of coverage from the phone.

I'd say your stand alone GPS should perform better in bush (rural environments) than any inbuilt phone function. Why? The standalone unit will have a better antenna and it won't be surrounded with any other (RF) noise from the gubbins that perform the fone functions.

GPS recievers at cellsites are used for timing. The GPS system is after all the most accurate timing system you'll get for the $$ because thats the basis of how it works... (Every satellite has a very accurate atomic clock and your low cost unit simply measures the time differences in the satellite signals)

Agree on the antenna bit, however you can turn all those "gubbins" off that perform the phone functions by using the "Flight Mode".

One other consideration for extended periods in the bush is battery life. The stand alone unit will probably have bigger a battery and may also allow the installation of dry cells to power the unit.

Yes, good point, my Garmin GPS allows you to use rechargeable batteries, and you can have a few spares with you and change them over if you need to. But, I get at least 4 hours continuous use before I need to change batteries. I guess using the N8 GPS for 4 hours would probably be hard on the N8 battery? Overall, for serious tramps, I don't think I would leave my dedicated Garmin GPS behind.

But, what concerns me more about the N8 is this earlier posting about problems with some N8's:

Has anyone experienced the problems referred to in the above link. I wonder how widespread this problem is? Will Nokia do a recall to fix these problems?

Incidentally, I went into Noel Leeming today and they said they had "minus 1" N8 units in stock! You have to place an order and apparently it takes a few days before the unit arrives in store.

Hi Fred. I haven't experienced any issues at all. As mentioned in that link, Nokia has identified and fixed the issue on the production line. So the new units shouldn't have any issues. However if by some chance you do get a bad one, it will be covered under warranty.

It's a fantastic phone, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Some people complain about the UI or the usability, but i have had no concerns go this area. I'm a first time symbian user, and find it much more logical, and easier to use, than iphone or android.

Its good to see that NZ is getting the same version as everywhere else... as with the X6 we only got the lesser 16GB version, not the 32GB (of which came out in a better colour combination too).

The one question I have I cant seem to find an answer for... So hopefully someone here knows...

Will NokiaNZ be directly selling this device? (i.e You can purchase a fully unbranded factory origional N8 direct from Nokia). As in the past this has been the major problem I have had... I really dont want to buy a branded model from Voda etc... So in the past for my Nokia's I have simply gone onto the NokiaUK website (www.nokia.co.uk) and purchased on origional device from Nokia and had it shipped to a friends house in the UK... and then they have shipped it to me. (Warranty isnt a problem like this as the NZ care centre can sort out any problems if the device was faulty).

So... Am I going to have to order the UK version again? Or can I buy it from NokiaNZ?

Just buy one from Parellel Import shop or website, It is not branded (Even it is branded just flash the phone and you should be fine)

Mr. Nokia man (Brent or Nick) will able to help you in regards to purchasing directly from Nokia

About $50 less that Vodafone is selling it for. Not much savings..
