The newest Italian firmware will bring the 3D taskmanager, fix the browser stop bug, bring other speed/stability improvements, improve the gallery application, still have the AAC audio encoding (which I think you should have on your current firmware), fix problems with the communities application, probably introduce the Samsung applications store, a few other things probably that I'm forgetting or that aren't yet known...

once i have flashed the italian firmware will i be able to use studio 7 to upgrade to any future firmware? do i need to do a back up or will the apps i have already loaded be safe?

Yes, you'll be able to update using the PC Suite afterwards to any new Italian firmwares that come. Apps will need reinstallation, and you should backup your contacts.

Well, I was forced to update to the Russian firmware this morning - my phone was freezing and failing to boot. Not sure whats at play here, but I had just installed Symabook yesterday, so I'm rather suspicious of that piece of software now (not that its even particularly good in its current incarnation). Since it wouldn't boot I couldn't go straight to the new Italian version, as I needed to use the flashing tool since I could still get into service/boot mode and only the Russian version has been uploaded to the i8910 forum.

So far its brilliant. 3D Taskmanager is pretty nice, speed overall is improved (and this was already a fast phone), 40MB free on C:, browser stop bug is fixed, and furthermore its many times faster now, Gallery is near perfect - loads pictures virtually immediately, camera remembers user settings, there are more accelerometer-dependent features (like silence music player), still hackable, landscape QWERTY is improved, but no app store. Need to give Digia@web browser another go since improvements to the S60 browser are carried over into that browser...

Question for anyone on the Italian firmware - is there any point in flashing to that firmware? More widgets available? This one lacks the WiFi widget and crucially the 'more widgets' widget. I'm assuming the extra widgets come at a cost in terms of free C: space, in which case I might rather avoid it...

I'm running the newest italian firmware now, not much real noticeable difference.
I still wish that they fix up the audio for videos, did some recording last night at a party in D1 audio was awful :|

I have been using symabook for about 2 weeks (not that it is very useful) and it has'nt caused any crashes.

After much delay I was expecting a bit more from this latest firmware.Its not much different from the russian one ?

That Symabook app is rubbish IMO.

The new Nokia Communities app shows much more promise, be interested to know if would work on the Omnia

Could well work, I'm only running Sportstracker at the moment, but have also had Nokia Messaging, Nokia Maps, Nokia's Facebook App, Nokia's photobrowser and a few other Nokia softwares running on my i8910.

EDIT: Awesome, communities app now works for Facebook upload for me. Requires a rather uneccessarily complicated method to set it up, but working now.

can anyone tell me how to enter the network settings. i am trying to send a pxt but am getting 'no valid access point defined'. i currently have a 2 degrees sim card and when i go to their website they have WAP gateway IP, WAP gateway port (WAP2) and WAP gateway port (WAP1). what are the corresponding fields on the i8910?

and now my screen is locking up on the Network Destinations screen even after a few resets. Any ideas?

I did a hard reset which seems to fix the problem of the Destinations screen locking but i still can't send a picture message (No valid access point. Define now?). I think it has something to do with my settings. I have the 2dgrees settings but they don't seem to correspond to anything in the phone - WAP gateway IP, WAP gateway port (WAP2) and WAP gateway port (WAP1). Can anyone tell me where i should put these in or is there something else i'm doing wrong?

Sorry atothek, completely missed your post. No idea how to help that one, presumably 2degrees has a customer service helpline?

Anyways, on to the news at hand:

NEW FIRMWARE! This time a Chinese one that brings the latest build of the symbian browser - even newer than the N97 one - therefore the default browser now has kinetic scrolling and auto-hiding of the sidebar on page loading! Woot! This one also has 42MB of free C: space on first boot too, which is great.

EDIT: In case you missed it: Gmail can now sync via exchange - great news for us Gmail using i8910 owners as we can use google sync fully with the inbuilt Roadsync client on our phones (which happens to be the premier exchange sync software for S60). Awesome! I can confirm it is working perfectly...

Well, I took the plunge and got me an i8910 and wow, it's an awesome phone. I've got my OPDA cert and chucked on the latest version of HelloOX but was wondering if any of you guys had a link to a guide on how to update the firmware? Sorry, my first smartphone.

Congratulations!

Check the forum at samsungi8910omnia.com - all the help you need is there. I believe there is actually a blog post from the sites front page that gives you a step-by-step guide too. In terms of what firmware to go with I'd suggest either the latest Italian one, or the latest hyperx firmware (a custom ROM - it mixes the browser from the latest Chinese FW, brings speed improvements and kinetic scrolling to the browser, with the best elements from other firmwares).

Already got your OPDA cert eh - good work! Sounds like you're doing just fine with your first smartphone.
