Hey gang,
Every time that I am trying to synchronize with my desktop computer (Sony Viao) I either get a Communications Error message from my IPAQ stating "Cannot start communications with the desktop computer. Remote Networking could not start due to a critical error (Error 1). Please reconnect your device. If the problem persists, restart your device using the instructions provided by the manufacturer." After contacting HP/Compaq Tech support and finding out that I am outside of my 1 year warranty, they would not freely assist me and my issue.

I have tried to uninstall the Microsoft Activesync software and then tried to re-install the software. When going through these motions, I can get as far as the Product ID name and it is prefilled with "Pocket_PC" but when I hit next, it tells me that I cannot use that name because it is being used by another device (I own only this mobile device) and is not unique. When I try to change the name, it will not allow me to do so....grrrrrrrrr!!!

Any suggestions, advice or helpful ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Sgt.

Hi Sgt.
On your iPAQ before docking go to Start (menu) | Settings | System (tab) | About | Device ID (tab) and change the Device name. Note that it is a good idea to not use "_" an underscore in the device name. So try HP3850.

Hope this helps

SgtRockmtm, follow David's suggestion to use a unique name. Also, if you want to delete the data for the old partnership, you'll find the folder is under \Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\.

Hey Gang,
Thanks for the assistance on that first problem. I was able to connect the device once but now when I try to connect I am getting a communications error window that states:

" Cannot Start communications with the desktop computer. Remote networking could not start due to a critical error (Error 1). Please reconnect your device. If the problem persists, restart your device using the instructions provided by the manufacturer."

Any ideas on how to resolve this issue? Thanks in advance for the hand up....

Sgt.

The normal computer that I dock with happens to be a Sony Viao, so if that helps I don't think it is the Sony. More info about your iPAQ would be helpful. Is it running PocketPC 2002 or have you upgraded to the new Windows Mobile 2003? Some solutions only apply to one or the other.

More info about your network might also be helpful. Microsoft doesn't give me a list of error codes for ActiveSync so Error 1 means about the same to me as it goes to you. Other than it is not one that I recall seeing before.

I'll tell you what, give me a few days and I'll see if I can find someone willing to give me a hint as to what error 1 might mean.

Thanks

My iPAQ is running the following software: Microsoft Pocket PC Version 3.0.11171(Build 11178) circa 1996-2001. It has am Intel (R) PXA250 63.18 MB. I certainly hope that this information is what you are needing to help reference the error 1 message that I get often. I don't know if I have told you guys this but Thank you very, very much. I have owned this iPAQ for over 1 year now and have never called or spoken with HP/Compaq until a few days ago and because I was outside the warranty, they would not speak with me unless I paid them $ 40.00 plus per hour. I spoke with a manager and he was straight-lined and unbending when I explained my situation. That is where my grrrrrrrrr's started. I found this forum completely by mistake and I feel that it is the best mistake I have ever made in my life. Thank you again and I look forward to hopefully enjoying my Pocket PC again.

Ray, please open a new thread. Please post your Pocket PC model, OS version, if you're using USB or Bluetooth, the computer model and OS version.
