Hi

I have noticed that the price for a new Nokia N9 has fallen considerably recently.  I am tempted to buy one as the N9 looks beautiful. Does the beauty and uniqueness outweigh the lack of apps?   I have an IPod touch as backup so I would mostly use it as a phone.

Thanks

I think the N9 is a seriously good phone.  Sure it doesn't have the vast array of apps that some phones have however there is still a good range of apps out there depending on your requirements.  In my opinion apps are over rated anyway. Look here for a list of apps. http://n9-apps.com/

If you're looking for a smart looking phone that has a decent size screen to watch video and browse the internet, has good call quality, and an excellent camera you probably can't go wrong. Plus there's the very very good Nokia Drive/Maps app with turn by turn navigation with free updates which when you compare the price of the phone against a dedicated device like a NavMan it starts to makes the price very attractive.

There's not likely to be more in the way of updates for the OS, but I don't see that as being a major issue as the OS seems to be very good in it current version. I seriously considered the N9 but ended up with the E7 as I wanted the physical keyboard.

P.S. I forgot to mention it will work on all three networks, which is a big bonus for some owners.

Hi

Bought one. So pleased. Just fun.  It is quirky and a bit under cooked. (a few apps simply don't work) but is gorgeous.  I never realised  how boring iOS had become (interesting that I will trade off some practicality for just some different experiences). Nokia should have stuck with it.  This os feels a winnEr. Can't find PR 1.3 though which is sad.

Thanks for the encouragement.

I'm pleased you're happy with your purchase and that you found my advice useful. Opinions on these matters are very subjective and personal.

I'll most likely pick up an N9 for myself in the near future, just to see what they're like.  It'll be a bit of an extravagance since I already had a good smart phone.

I agree that Nokia should have stuck with Meego OS.  Meego is better/nicer than Symbian, and Symbian is in my opinion currently better and more versatile than the OS Nokia replaced Symbian with.  The decision to change I believe was politically driven rather than feature/function driven.

Stephen Elop (the current Nokia CEO, ex Microsoft executive) made the infamous "Burning platform" statement about Symbian and the "King with no clothes" and "The too long to develop" statements about Meego as the justification to move to WP.  Yet Meego hit the streets well before WP did in Nokia phones, and both Symbian and Meego were more feature rich than WP at its' release and probably still are.
