Hmmm. Perhaps "i" for Internet and PAQ for Compaq? But couldn't be, the first models came out without that much connectivity and ages ago.

I thought the same things. Maybe Intel for the processor? I can't seem to find reference to it anywhere.

well at first everybody started adding a 'e' to the names of the products, and then it was no longer cool and the thing to do was to add an 'i' to your products.

On the related note, there are a spate of small companies who have decided it would be cool to be called something ending with 'paq'

Well, "paq" is obviously from Compaq. But the "i" surely must mean something. I can find nothing on this, and no one who seems to know!

Just a guess, but I think I read it somewhere a few years ago, when the 3400 series was launched.

my guess:

"i" for individual (in the case for iPaq PDA)

"i" for integrated/internet-enabled/internet-appliance (in the case for iPaq desktop)

"i" for improved (in the case for Nokia)
