I have an iPAQ H4150 and would like to add a 256mb SD Card. What is the best on the market?

They are all fairly similiar. I know of no tests where any particular card comes out on top for longevity, speed, quality or any other measure when it comes to use in PDAs. Some manufactures (e.g. SanDisk) make a range of "Ultra" cards which have a higher write/read speed although this is primarily related to their use in Digital Cameras where write speed is critical when shooting multiple frames per second etc.

In general, PDAs tend to use a static read/write speed - i.e. it is not contingent on the card. This is what I've read elsewhere - anyone can back this up? Certainly HP/Compaq et al don't advertise their SD slots as being able to benefit from "Ultra" cards or have a write speed of X.

So in short, go to http://www.flashcards.co.nz/ and get a Kingston card :) Flashcards are the cheapest around by far, trust.

Will try to confirm any difference on the ultra II cards... ordered one and it is coming in the mail tomorrow. I'll try an unofficial test with some large movie file transfers.

btw - costco's prices on SD cards is great, around $70 for 256MB.

I've generally found them much of a muchness, but SanDisk is general don't have a fantastic reputation. I've certainly had endless problems with mine. YMMV.

I've certainly never had any problems with the KingMax or Panasonic cards.

Note: you need to be a member to buy from there. I just bought one the other day and I just received one of those Ultra II ones as well... Looking forward to seeing if there is really much of a difference.

Looks like the site's been changed. Can't find the SD card on the site now, but still available in the store itself. (Kirkland WA). They do have the Ultra II 512MB, but it is more at 109.99.

I've only had one problem with SD cards and it was a Kingston 512 that went belly up. Otherwise never seen a difference between any of them. Btw - I've had great luck with the Sandisk Wi-fi card.

I actually have a Sandisk 256MB and a Compaq 128MB. Both work very well on my iPAQ, Kodak LS443 and my i-mate Smartphone. I tend to leave the Sandisk on my camera and carry the Compaq on my Smartphone.

I can't see the point on comparing the brand unless we have a specific hardware host to benchmark. For example a brand can be fast on a dedicated digital camera, but could be slower on a Pocket PC. It all depends on driver specialisation, hardware and OS.

In Mostly Harmless's case I can see that he had problems with his Sandisk, but this is the same guy who had a Palm Tungsten T3 from the first batch

, the ones that fried the SD cards because of a faulty software...

*grin* Yes the T3 of doom. Funnily enough, the majority of the cards killed by that problem were SanDisk. The others tended to work after a reformat.

I also had the replacement for that card fail (after the Palm patch) which didn't reassure me.

On the other hand, they have a 5 year replacement warranty (well, mine did). So it wasn't really an issue, beyond some inconvenience!
