According to the manual I can directly synchronise to Exchange Server 2003 over IP. Has anyone done this? Any tips & tricks or warnings?

No tricks involved...

You can add the Exchange Server in two ways: directly on the device (open ActiveSync tap Menu and tap "Configure Server") or while connected to a PC, open ActiveSync on your PC and file the option to add a server source.

If you use HTTPS you must install the server's certificate on the device (simply copy the certificate file, and on your Pocket PC open File Explorer and tap on the file).

Of course if you are synchronising over HTTP or HTTPS then you must have either port (80, 443) open on your firewall and fowarding to the correct server.

If you want to have Direct Push then make sure the Jasjar is running the latest ROM version (with AKU 2) and your Exchange Server must be configured to allow synchronisation initiated via HTTP or HTTPS. The rest will be automatic.

My hope, along with email push, was to have Outlook operation to perform as the destop version. Currently invites from calender do not get sent. First fighting with upgrading my Win2K based Active Directory to accept the new SBS 2003 as a domain controller.

It works well for me, including sending and receiving calendar appointments. Make sure your infrastructure is working well before you start using this, because you don't want to be chasing something completely unrelated after adding another item in the equation...

my old active directory installation has been in good health, have prepared it for 2003 to be added as a domain controller but promotion did not complete successfully (replication connectors did not build). I'll demote it and try again then hopefully I can get Exchange installed. I've only got 2 weeks holiday, not sure if I'll be able to get it running by then.

What I want to setup with Exchange 2003 is that my ISP continues to be used for sending and recieving email, i.e. we have 2 addresses, husband@bigISP.co.nz & wife@bigISP.co.nz, and I want to send and recieve email via the ISP SMTP/POP servers, can this be done with Exchange 2003 (currently using LANSuite to perform this role, but it can only send via one address, i.e. all outgoing email goes out as husband@bigISP.co.nz)

First, sending...

On your Exchange Server, configure it to use SmartHost, which is just telling the server to relay everything going out through the ISP's SMTP instead of using its own internal SMTP service.

The e-mail address will be the default e-mail address associated with your account in the domain.

For incoming, if the  Exchange Server is not the primary MX for your domain (i.e. collecting e-mail from an ISP) then you will need a pop3 connector. I use POPCon to collect e-mail from Paradise every two minutes and post into the mailboxes here.

SmartHost worked a treat. The default email addresses needed a bit of tweeking as the alias was appended in an unexpected way to the domain. Can you advise where the equivalent POP setting resides, "Front-end server" perhaps?

POP settings? To grab pop emails into Exchange? There's nothing like this, that's why I pointed to POPCon.

how odd. The smart host worked a treat and yet no support for the reverse? Thanks for you assistance. Once I get the WebMail operational I will attempt my first ActiveSync (5 days in the making, it's all quite exciting)

Should have gone with SBS (aparently has connector included). This was useful rsource http://www.slipstick.com/exs/popconnect.asp. Can you advise if POPCon runs as a service and can have manually defined delivery rules?

Yes, POPCon is a service and you can define rules and more...

arg! I'm about to abandon ship. I'll have to install SBS-2003 and no longer have replicated DC (god help me when it fails). Do you know if the Exchange that ships with SBS-2003 supports ActiveSync (not that I can get it to work with Server-2003), synchronization returns with "waiting for network" when I attempt to Synch. 5 days down the line and nothing to show :-(

Tips & Tricks:

Tip: Just Don't Try

Attempting to upgrade a 2000 AD was painfully problematic
Server 2003 has no POP3 connector
Small Business Server 2003 has a pop connector that connects but can not see the messages in the mailbox, the SSL cert failed due to a  template issue that I have not been able to resolve

The sales material looked great, synchronise independantly of a client machine, just what I wanted, a week later I have an existing domain that has lost it's global catalog, another box with Server 2003 installed which has been promoted and demoted and finally a SBS 2003 partial installation. What a disaster. Reinstating the domain from backups now and formatting both test boxeds (2003).

Trick: Windows Mobile devices still have a VERY long way to go, just buy a basic PDA (I wonder if I can buy my T3 back ;-)

I think you agree that problems with Exchange Server upgrade, domain configuration, migration, and management cannot and should not be imputed to Windows Mobile.

After all Windows Mobile is only a clien on this thing. I have a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition running with Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, plus Directory and Newsgator Enterprise Server on the same machine and have had no problems synchronising Windows Mobile devices.

I actually decided not to install RIM BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) because that would be more changes than you have done...

For example, I had the Palm Treo 680 here for testing (Palm OS) and found out it will not accept self issued certificates, period. No way to load your own certificates, like on Windows Mobile. Therefore no way to have encrypted synchronisation to my Exchange Server. That alone kills the Palm OS-based devices for many organisations - and possibly for you as well?

Point taken, there have been so many problems I have not allocated them correctly. I apear to be very close now. I have installed SBS again, with SMTP and POP3 via my ISP operational (using the connectors supplied by MS). The SSL is working from my Laptop (which is not on the SBS domain and has the SBS supplied certififcate installed), however I can not install the certificate on the JasJar, does Vodafone not allow this to be installed? This appears to be the last hurdle between me and mobile synchronisation and from this article appears that this restriction is applied by the operator http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/2003/deploy/winm5.mspx.
