I have the following memory on my system.

                         Free                    Total            In Use

Program Memory 20.42MB           49.20MB          28.78MB
Storage Memory 20.07MB           39.59MB          19.53MB

I am looking at moving Opera 8.6 from minSD to storage memory, it takes up 6MB.

if I load Opera to storage, will this mess up the performance of the Windows Mobile 5 device?

This will leave approx 14MB left in storage.

Thank You and Happy Holidays

dave

You should be ok - providing you uninstall Opera first, soft reset your Pocket PC and then install it again.

Make sure you have at least 15MB available on Storage when you start installation, because the software is first copied as a .cab file, decompressed and then this .cab file is removed.

If you have used Pocket Internet Explorer before, it may be worth cleaning up its cache: open PIE, tap Options, and the [Delete Files] button. This should free up some more storage.

Hi,

Happy Holidays and Thank You for your prompt reply.

I do clean my cache for both Opera and PIE 3 times a week.

Your answer raises another question.

What is the minimum amount of storage required for Windows Mobile 5 to function properly.

if I add Opera to my storage, what do I loose as far as performance/functionality on my Windows Mobil device?

There is a registry hack to make Opera work on storage card, I have not figured out how to implement.

If someone could advise on this question, it would be appreciated.

Thank You Dave

The memory for program execution (RAM) is separate from the storage area (Flash). You shouldn't need much available for executing a program, since the OS would close any program not in use if more memory is needed.

However we all know sometimes the OS won't just close programs as quickly as you'd like, so I always install and use MagicButton (www.trancreative.com) as a task manager.

As for storate, you need the space for your data, plus space for any programs installed in memory (not on SD card), plus some temporary area (mostly used by program cache such the ones for PIE) and you will need some spare space for temporaty use while installing a new program (even if installing on SD card).

So really you could have your storage memory filled up to almost 100% if not installing anything new...
