How does the backup work? Eg, I have a fully synched system. I make a full backup,. I flash the PPC and restore.

The next time I sync, it will STILL ask to combine 400 odd contacts. So if it can't tell them apart, why backup the contacts at all?

Anyone know how it all works? I figure I don't need anything I sync in my backups now. Eg notes, mail, contacts, tasks.

Then it will pull them from the PC and not ask me what to do.

Backups on Windows Mobile devices are not like backups on Palm OS. On Palm OS the Hotsync will restore the device's last condition with a restore of needed files.

On Pocket PC world you have to manually restore or use a backup/restore program. Even so I don't recommend doing this. It's not wise restoring configuration from one version of OS into another. You said you ahve flashed the device so I understand you've performed an OS upgrade... Don't restore the backup! Delete the previous partnership on your computer, without removing the File sync folder, plug the Pocket PC and create a new one. That will restore your PIM information and files. Now reinstall all programs.

Backups are only good to restore to the same version levels.

I mean I did a hard reset. Usually I do a backup, test a new program for a day or two, then unless I want to keep the said program, I reset and restore.

However, there seems no point backing up the PIM info in the 1st place, due to the sync wierdness.
