Hi all,

A friend of mine has a Windows phone.
I've never used a Windows phone before, and it has an issue, so I'm asking for your help.

When I click Marketplace, no selections appear. It's a blank black screen with a large header "applications".
You can scroll and the header (applications) scrolls as if you're going from page to page - again, no icons, the screen is otherwise blank.

The phone is working ok I guess. I can text or phone my friend ok and they can text me.
The stats from the About Phone selection:

Phone information
Name: HTC 7 Trophy
Model: HTC 7 Trophy
Software: Windows ® Phone 7
Total Storage: 7.20 GB
Available Storage: 6.58 GB

OS version: 7.0.7004.0
Firware revision number: 2250.09.10906.179
Hardware revision number: 0003
Radio software version: 5.50.09.15_22.23.50.09U
Radio hardware version: A.102.0.D4
Bootloader version: 1.9.2250.6(111329)
Chip SOC version 2.2.5.0

Is this marketplace behaving normally? Does something need to be set up first? Where should I start?

Cheers,
Rob

Looks to me like the phone is running a very early version of Windows Phone. You should install Zune on your PC and update the phone before doing anything else.

You might find that version of WP7 was EOL'd because you're on 7.0 which came out 2/3 years ago or something. That phone has a 7.5 upgrade, perhaps a 7.8.

The HTC Trophy 7 will run Windows Phone 7.8. I have it installed on mine. You should be able to upgrade using the Zune software on any PC. I used one of the many documented tricks to force a 7.8 upgrade at the time it came out but it should be automatic by now I would have thought.

Yeah you can definitely run 7.8 on the Trophy, my work phone has it.

It's still rubbish though

The update to 7.8 is well worth doing. I have it on my HTC Mozart, a close cousin to the HTC Trophy.

7.8 is very stable and functions well, and definitely more stable than the initial releases of Windows Phone 8. While many apps now being released for WP8 eclipse those for WP7 in both range and functionality, for many people, WP7 with 7.8 still provides a very usable day to day phone experience.
