So I finally convinced my mother to buy a 'smart' phone and we settled on the Lumia 520 but we're having some troubles as of today.

When she tries to send an SMS to my partners iPhone (Vodafone) they always fail with a SMS error 69.

She can send a picture message fine, but text only always fail.

Mum's on Telecom and can message my S4 (also on telecom) no problem.

Thoughts?

Nope, and there is no 'retry' option in any case. We've tried to send a dozen or so messages of varying length and if there is only text in the message then it fails.

Is your account in credit?

can your SIM send texts OK from another phone?

Do you have the Nokia app installed called Access Point installed? If not install it.

if so run it, from Settings and it will detect your SIM and setup the network correctly

There's no updates due, It's all up to date.

The number has been tried in +6421... 021... +64021.... formats. All of which are saved to the contact first. All will send picture messages, none will send text SMS's.

There is no Nokia Access Point app installed, nor can I find it on the store.

I don't know of anyone (short of asking everyone in my phone book which seems silly) who is on Vodafone so I can't say if it's a network dependant issue.

Does same SIM card work in another handset for SMS?

I was unable to try the sim in a different phone before we fixed the problem.

I'm not quite sure what it was exactly, but by deleting the individual thread and starting it again with a new message it has been fixed.

So for those reading this unsure of how to fix it, you'll find your answer above.
