Trying to figure out how to stream movies from Windows Home Server ver 1, to a Nokia 520 Mobile

Have seen the WHS Phone app, but that seems more of a management tool with streaming bolted on. Just want to stream movies without the management functions.

Ideally if it could run the MyMovies or Media Centre Extender, cause I like the way it looks and navigates, and for a consistent look n feel as compared to the Xbox 360 :-)

TIA

Hi,   I have a Lumia 620 and a couple of months ago and used the Moliplayer app with WHS V1 NAS quite successfully.  I also configured a Raspberry Pi with XBMC using the XBMC Remote app on the 620 and that also works pretty well.  I have not continued with the Moliplayer as I find the small screen of the 620 rather too small for video viewing.

Install Plex on your WHS and get the Plex app. It works great, and is free right now.

+1 for Nathan - I'd use plex as well. The only caveat would be the cpu speed on your whs machine.

Sheesh, had forgotten about this thread :-), but probably timely now that I have additional devices to connect back to the WHS 1. Have a couple of older resurrected XP PC's that I plan to use as basic media clients hooked up via the DB15 VGA to a couple of spare flat panel TV's. Not pretty, but will serve as a temporary measure until I get a RaspberryPI or two.

So, install Plex or XMBC on WHS1, that is the question :-).

Back to the original query, I did find MyMediaHub app, that seemed to work quite well, but never quite got into the hang of watching too much video on a teeny screen ...

Thanks for the replies.

Cheers

I actually bought Media Browser 3 a week ago for my 520, but it had a lot of issues, although usable. After reading this thread I sprung for Plex, and it is a much better option, I'd certainly recommend it for the Lumia 520.

Hi again,   what I didn't mention and forgive me if you know all about the XBMC set-up, is that using the 520 loaded with the XBMC remote app, not only can you control the XBMC software loaded on the RASPi which in turn displays the XBMC menu sytem on the TV screen via HDMI connection, you have a cut-down version the artwork etc displayed on the 520 also.  This provides an option to check review material about the movie itself.  The same applies also if you are are using a W8.1 laptop/tablet but with an upgraded version of presentation and functionality.

As for the WHS1, it is still doing a pretty good job in streaming my movie and music library but sometimes wonder whether there would be significant advantages in switching to a more modern technolgy from QNAP or Synology.

regards

Thanks Renwick - will look into using XBMC + RaspBerryPi combo on WHS 1.

Sounds good to have the remote app, and do away with a keyboard /mouse interface to the Pi

Good to hear you are planning to give it go but don't throw away the KB and Mouse just yet as you may need those for the initial set-up.  One thing to consider since you are starting from scratch, is the use of a fast USB memory stick for storage to take a bit of pressure off the Ras Pi .  Due to lack of spare time on my part,  I have not used this option and I sense that my set-up is just about on the limit and starting to struggle with the graphics of some of the XBMC screen options.  Planning to purchase another Pi in couple of months and go for the USB option.  Regret I am not an expert on that so I can't give you any further info but if you go on the XBMC 'How to' page it will get you on the right track.  Look forward to hearing how you get on.

Haven't go my Pi as yet, my Xmas wishes were ignored. Might have to invoke the "sometimes better to beg for forgiveness after the fact than ask for permission beforehand clause..."

Am aware of using a USB3 stick to take the load off the Pi (have read the Pi and XBMC "getting started with guides"), and using a class10 Media Card.

As regards the keyboard and mouse, - after setup, it's all to do with the WAF, according to her, - nothing clunky to use, thank you very much .... :-), though she has successfully wrangled the Tivo into submission, and pushed all my Season Passes to the bottom of the list !!! Give 'em an inch, and they take the whole remote control !!

Fired up the RaspberryPi this weekend, loaded up XBMC, configured with basic settings, connected it the WHS V1 movie Share, via Wifi (802.11g) and all up n playing within an hour or so.

Installed the XBMC remote from 7Illusions onto the 520, and this combo works well, though the trial period just ended :-(

Which XBMC Remote app did you use ?

Haven't quite figured how to get the XBMC to see the metadata that MyMedia has created on the home server, but that's  for another forum.

But all n all, pretty impressed by the ease of the XBMC install, and setup.

Hi There,  good to hear you are up and running and also using the 7illusions RC which is the one I use.   Are you using the USB set-up and what version of RASPBMC are you running ?  What skin did you configure with -  some of them can be quite on resources especially if you are running a lot of artwork. Still thinking of getting another more powerful box but I doubt there is anything to match the Ri for cost.

Running it straight off the SD Card, latest ver as of last week - 12.2 ? I think - so far no performance or stuttering issues, then again, I'm not streaming 1080p vids - just mostly 720p mp4's that I had previously converted for Xbox360.

Standard skin, though some of the others look interesting - Aeon MQ3 or something ? Different folder views, page flow, etc.

Installed a couple of add-ins - pity the NZonDemand doesn't work :-(. Youtube does. I'm sure that there a few others waiting to be discovered ...
