I am using a Windows Mobile 5 device with an IMAP mail server and want to sync Sent Items in addition to the Inbox. However, with the box ticked to sync the Sent Items folder and with "Keep copy of sent mail in Sent folder" also ticked, when I send an email it is written to the local Sent Items folder, but the next time I "Send/Receive" email, my last Sent Items get deleted.

Any ideas or work-arounds? I have since gone back and tested a Windows Mobile 2003SE device with an IMAP connection and realsied that the same behaviour happens there. In both cases, I have tried this against an Exchange Server and also my domain provider's IMAP server (not actually sure what it is), but with the identical problem.

Is this IMAP server the same Exchange Server? If so, why not synchronise directly to Exchange using ActiveSync instead of IMAP?

Of course you would need port 443 (if SSL is avaialble) or port 80 (if no SLL_) redirected to your server...

No just tried that to see if this was a universal problem. I am already syncing via Activesync to an Exchange server at work. This is a separate IMAP mail server. I was thinking maybe I had set up something incorrectly.

Microsoft and IMAP don't get on very well, not on the desktop and not on Windows Mobile. I've been kvetching about this for many years now, but suspect Microsoft sees IMAP support as a necessary evil that shouldn't be made too good. It's not as if Microsoft can't do good IMAP support: Outlook Express is very usable as an IMAP client. Outlook isn't great, and Windows Live Mail is a downgrade from OE.

I'm on the lookout for a better email program for Windows Mobile that can do IMAP-SSL... suggestions here would be welcome.

You are not wrong there Juha. Further experimentation has revealed:

- Using Windows Mobile 5 IMAP against the Exchange server & tuning off the "Keep copy of sent mail in Sent folder" actually results in the item being sent, turning up in the Server Sent Items, turn it back on and it gets deleted and never makes it to the server.
- Using it against my domain provider's IMAP server (whatever it is that RegisterDirect have behind the scenes) actually does result in a copy being kept whether "Keep copy of sent mail in Sent folder" is on or off. I was originally looking in the wrong folder because WM5 uses "Sent Items" whereas I was looking in the default "Sent" folder for the IMAP server. There is no obvious provision to amend this in WM5.
