For those of you that still enjoy using your Symbian Nokia smartphone there's a new App Store to carry on from the Nokia Store which is no longer accepting new or updated apps for Symbin or Meego phones.

It's great that Symbian is still being supported by some developers.

Actually just downloaded it today. Mainly to see if it would play video from websites like NZHerald since Opera Mobile no longer supports this. It crashed each time I tried to play a video.

Otherwise it looks OK though I'm not sure I prefer it to Opera. More testing required yet on that score. It seems to take longer than Opera to load the pages on my E7. What phone are you using?

D'oh. I'm using a Nokia 700 (Symbian Belle FP2). Star Browser doesn't seem slow to load page to me. Hopefully development continues and crash issues get resolved (I have emailed the developer about this).

EDIT: Opera Mobile played a video on m.nzherald.co.nz nicely for me tonight. Did you try the mobile version of the website? It seems to use the system video player to play videos. If you get an advert, you might need to press pause button on on the webpage afterwards and then the play button to view the video.

I've been having a more detailed play with the Star browser. Unfortunately I've been spoiled by Opera, for me Opera is the gold standard in mobile browsers.

With Star there is no text reflow when you pinch and zoom which is something I find important. When you set the text size to a bigger size the text doesn't always display properly. There is no exit button to exit out of the browser. While it's quite good as a browser that I presume is in the early stages of development I think I'll be uninstalling it.

As for the video playing issue with Opera, I see that the error is due to no mobile data connection. I'm currently running the E7 on WiFi only. I don't see what the difference would be between having a data connection or a WiFi connection. I'll have to put the sim back in and see what happpens.

My Opera Mobile test was using WiFi. You might need to go into your phone's Settings -> Application Settings -> Videos -> Access Point In Use.

Thanks, that fixed it, missed that setting. Looked everywhere else for it. It was set to "Telecom Data" with no sim card inserted. I've been swapping between the N9 and E7 every two or three months depending on what I need the phones for or what features I may wish to use.

It doesn't give the option of using the default access point (like some other apps do) but lists each access point the phone has been set up for listed in the order they are on the Settings>Connectivity>Settings>Network Destinations>Internet page. I had to choose my home's access point, which was at the top of the list.

I have a question. Is this just the default access point you're setting and does the video app like the email and other apps then select the next available access point down the list if this access point isn't available or do you have to manually set it each time?

I don't remember ever having to manually set it in the past and from memory it seemed to select the access point as required. I don't ever remember setting the access point as you describe though it's a while (nearly 3 years) since I bought the phone and may have done so in the dim dark past.

I'm wondering if my problem was precipitated by the meltdown I had when Swype stopped working on New Years Day (Swype had put an expiry date of 31/12/2013 on the app and didn't bother to tell anyone).

I decided to reinstall a modified version of Swype with a new date but stuffed up the process and had to reinstall the Nokia firmware. It's been since then that I've had issues with the video play back on Opera, probably If I remember correctly after I removed the sim card to use the N9 a few weeks ago.

I probably didn't get all the settings the same as they were prior to the rebuild, hence my issue. I'd put it down to some of the changes that have happened since the Microsoft take over and the reduction in access to some features or Opera reducing support for Symbian.

What do you think of the 700? I like the Belle software, it's certainly a big advancement on earlier versions and it has a lot of features that other OS's don't have. The one area that would have made a big difference was a faster processor though that would have impacted battery life. I think the 700 clocks faster than the E7 so you may not see the same lag I see on the E7. Otherwise it's a very good OS and much better than many critics give it credit for.

While I now have an N9 which I think is very good, I find the physical keyboard of the E7 superb for emails and the like. I travel a lot with work and being able to do emails on the go with the E7 is so so much better with a physical keyboard.

No problem. I love my Nokia 700. The phone is tiny, it fits in my jeans front pockets (maybe not so good for the crown jewels though perhaps?), and I get about 3 days of battery use if I go easy on it. I like its features, free maps, AMOLED screen, etc. It's reasonably snappy. It's not perfect, but I don't see anything that I am even remotely tempted to upgrade to - and I have no need to. :-)

I think some apps use "Internet" in Settings -> Connectivity -> Settings -> Network Destinations. You can give priority to certain APs, etc. But the systems video player settings seem to only list known wireless networks and data access points and not "Internet" unfortunately. So to watch those videos with Opera, one will need to set the system video player's Access Point In Use setting, which isn't convenient if you switch wifi networks or between wifi and packet data.

Like you I find it difficult to find anything that I would want to upgrade to. I bought the N9 mainly out of curiosity and am pleased I did, it's a great phone, but the E7 still does all I need, with the main exception being the N9 has a far superior camera and Meego is a faster smoother OS.

I have some apps I've installed which are pretty good, some from a techy geeky point of view and some from a practical point of view.

The techy geeky ones, Big Screen, Live View (augmented reality), DLNA Play, Upcode QR reader, Drive carefully (reads texts when driving though I haven't had a chance to try it yet), Panorama (Camera app)

The practical ones, Nokia Public Transport ( really good in major centres to find your way around with public transport, works in Auckland and Christchurch and most cities of the world, used it in Sydney and Brisbane), Accuweather, Sportstracker, Cute radio (replacement for Nokia Internet radio), Custom Dictionary (able to edit out those mistake words you get in the predictive dictionary), Joiku Spot (WiFi hotspot)

The E7 only has one button which is used for swapping between different screens. There are no red or green buttons like some Nokias. The exit buttons are a soft button in the App itself.

I have an idea it might have been a Nokia Beta Labs app that was initially developed for Symbian S60 5th edition (Ii had it to start with on my 5800 XM) but still works for Symbian Belle.

I don't know if it's still on the Store, even if it were it would say not available or not compatible with your phone. You're in luck though as I have a copy of the .sis file. I can send this to you. Are you familiar with loading apps via Nokia Suite?

EDIT: The app loads ok, but shows "(not data)" i.e. it doesn't seem to find my dictionary so it has 0 words. So maybe it doesn't work with my phone. I also tried the S60_5ed version.

I think until you have entered words that are not in the phones dictionary there will be no words in the Custom Dictionary.
