This week saw the shutting down of the Nokia Internet Radio service for Symbian devices.

Microsoft sure know how to drive away customers. They are certainly not endearing themselves to current Nokia owners who are likely to be the very people to buy a new product with the WP OS.

However I guess you do have to wonder why Microsoft ever bought the Nokia handset operation. Their master mind Stephen Elop trashed Nokia's market share and now it seems likely Microsoft will not even use the Nokia name for much longer. Perhaps it's no surprise after all that they have shown no loyalty to existing customers.

I think Google have shut down services with more users than Symbian and the N9 combined.
Lets face it though, they could have offered a trade in deal for symbian phone to a 520 or something like that for free and the symbian faithful would have been annoyed about it. The rose tinted glasses are in full force about how good Nokia was.

Considering Microsoft promised support till 2016 for Symbian, they haven't started off very well.

I don't know about being annoyed, but I know the 520 would have been left in the box and given away in my case. It'd be a bit like Ford saying to a Falcon owner, we're not going to be making Falcons anymore but we'll give you a Fiesta to replace your Falcon.

Yep, In my case because I want a physical qwerty keyboard, there's nothing to replace the E7.

True the processor in the Symbian devices lacks a bit of grunt but Symbian (Nokia) Belle (the final Symbian release) is a very well featured OS. WP 8 doesn't offer any real advancement, my wife who went from an N8 to a 920 likes the speed of the 920 OS but regularly complains it doesn't do stuff the N8 would do. I detest the browser in the 920, it's is a bit basic and there's really no better option unlike what's available for Symbian.

Truth is, Nokia was very good. They lost their way with too much navel gazing when they should have been putting the results of their innovation into the market. They spent too much effort with the Symbian and Meego development teams fighting for their own options instead of some proper leadership and getting on and getting Meego to market sooner. While at the time Symbian was good, Meego was the way forward. Then to cap it all off they appointed Stephen Elop who managed to drive their market share into the ground with the introduction of WP7.

Sorry, I realise I'm late to the party here, but I find this highly annoying as well. I still have my trusty Nokia E5 and it's a good phone. But I use the streaming audio every day and this is just a pain in the neck.

Although, someone may have found a workaround...

On another note, I dropped wife's old HTC Windows Trophy so I "upgraded" her to my Nokia Lumia 1020 - she was very impressed on how Windows Phone 8 is even better than Windows Phone 7, the screen and the camera (no comparison with any other device still). I am now using the HTC One M8... And a week later she dropped the bag and the Lumia 1020 LCD is gone. So I gave her an old HTC One M7 I had here.

I don't know about HTC, but I used a Samsung at work a couple of days ago and had to ask for help! I was in the Web browser and wanted to get into its settings. On my old Nexus One you'd tap the Menu button but this phone only had a Home button... or so I thought! It turns out that the Menu button still exists but is on a completely unmarked part of the bezel. Is this supposed to be intuitive?

I downloaded the Meego version last week and have been waiting for the Symbian version to be finished. I've just downloaded it now.

There's also an alternative App Store called AppList, you can find it here http://applist.schumi1331.de/ Cute Radio is on there.

You and a lot of other people. I wouldn't hold my breathe though.

I don't see the Nokia name lasting very much longer with Microsoft calling the shots, and I don't see them seeing any future with dumb phones. Microsoft ( Stephen Elop) is not that smart.

In fact I don't see Microsoft even having a mobile phone operation within a couple of years. Just take a look at their past involvement in the Mobile arena. Wasn't their Kin a resounding success? Two years development and a billion dollars wasted.

Most manufacturers who have used a Microsoft OS either don''t exist or don't make a mobile handset anymore (Palm, HP) or have pretty much dumped the Microsoft OS (Motorola, Samsung). Motorola was pretty well dead and buried before it was bought by Google.

Also I don't see the European (Nokia) staff understanding the Microsoft (US) way of doing things and vice versa for that matter. For this reason I don't see the Nokia/Microsoft union being successful.

Nokia understood the world, Microsoft understood the US.

My pick is for the Nokia to build it's own handsets in the future or for Nokia to get behind the likes of Jolla.

Symbian was good in it's day, but time moves on. Still loving WP8.1. The interface is so clean and smooth compared to the mess of Android. Samsung hasn't helped, but HTC has it's issues after seeing a friend battle with his photo gallery on his I'll stick with my Lumia :-)

I've ownded a few phones over the years and I think WP8.1 is heading in the right direction :-)

Are you running Symbian Belle?

If so open "Settings" Select "Installations" then"Installation Setting" and under "Software Installation" select "All". I also have the "Online Certificate Check" set to "Off".

That should allow you to install. Otherwise try installing from AppList.

Correct time does move on. WP is a step backwards in many areas from Symbian and Meego was a much better and more capable pathway than WP. Stephen Elop got it wrong.

Microsoft's mobile OS's reached their zenith back in 2005 when they held around 23% of market share and were tipped to overtake Symbian as the market leader by 2010. By August 2010 Microsoft share of the mobile OS market had shrunk to 5% and placed them 5th behind Symbian, Blackberry, Android and iOS in that order. Time moved on.
