First I cannot figure out how to search this forum, so here I go and apologize in advance if I repeat a topic.

I just recently acquired a h5555 used from my sister.  I brought it home and tried to connect to my wifi internet.  I was able to connect to the wifi internet at the airport (free internet) on the way back from my sisters.

OK Well I have set up wifi before many times, but for some reason this one always says that it cannot connect when I try and use the internet explorer.

I have a WEP 128b encrypted network and have tried that.

I also tried it un encrypted and WEP 64b also.  None seem to work.

When I am using a non encrypted network (disabled security) I try and open a web page and it says "The page you are looking for cannot be found" when it is clearly available.

Can anyone out there give me better detailed instructions on how to connect this device to my wifi connection then the lame instructions that HP gives??

I really need to get this thing connected.

Thank You
DBMDude

Yup, first you need to make sure it is getting a valid IP Address from DCHP, is it?

Can anyone tell me if the WEP is 64 or 128????

It is not getting an IP address the address is a 169.254 for the wireless and the USB adapter (in the cradle) is a 192.168.55 address and interestingly my router only puts out 192.168.2.X addresses... so how is it connecting to the internet in the cradle???  And how to I get it to connect wirelessly????

OK I do not understand... my wireless adapter in the H5555 had an address of 169.254.x.x and my USB adapter had an address of 192.168.55.x (not from my router which is 192.168.2.x) and yet it still had an internet connection in the cradle. NOW when it was out of the cradle the IPs were the same but I had no internet connection at all.

I really need a noobs guide to this thing because I cannot seem to get it to work the way I want it to.

Is there any better guide out there then the HP guide for this thing??? is there any way of knowing what level of WEP it is using??

Windows Mobile by defaults gets access to the Internet through ActiveSync.

yes thats correct, now the reason you got 169.... thats a Automatic Private Assigned address when it doesn't get one from the access point. well. You seem onto it yourself.

Without being there all that can be suggested is that you

*Turn everything off, and turn it all back on,
* On the access point turn off all encryption, and make sure it's not something stupid like MAC address blocking where only certain Devices are allowed to connect. (Worth Checking)
* Disable Bluetooth and everything else except WIFI on the HP5555 and yes make sure wifi is enabled
* When you see the AP in the list on your device hold down the stylus on the access point in the list and then click connect (this is equivalent to a right click)
* Make sure IP Settings are set to "automatic" so that It can obtain an IP Address from the Router or what ever you are using.
* eliminate the AP By using a laptop or something on it.

* If it is none of the above you are hard pressed for options - it would be a setting on the device and you will have to muck around with it.

And to add to that list, make sure your AP doesn't have MAC address filtering enabled, and make sure you have all WiFi patches from HP applied to this device.

There isn't a "dummies' guide" for Pocket PC. It will connect just like other devices, laptops. What most people need is help troubleshooting - and that's the list you got now...

OK I have tried all the suggestions above and NOTHING WORKS.

I get a connection on the IPAQ (flashing green light) and I get an IP address (normally a 192.168.2.7).  I usually have to specify the address as 192.168.2.7.  Some times I get a 169.254.x.x address while on wireless and undocked.  In both cases I still get an error that says "The page you are looking for cannot be found".  I cannot for the life of me figure this darn thing out.

What the heck do I need to do to get this thing going????????????  Do I need to call a brain surgeon???

On your Pocket PC tap Start | Settings | Memory, and check the applications you have running. Make sure you close Internet Explorer.

Then, still on your Pocket PC, open File Explorer, browse to \Windows and tap welcome.exe... Follow the instructions, and when finished connect to your wi-fi network.

If you got a 192.168.2.x address, open Internet Explorer and try browsing to a site again.

How do you know what IP address you are getting? Are you using a tool such as VxUtil? If you are using VxUtil, use its PING function to ping a server by IP address and then by name. See which one works. I suspect you are connected, it's only Internet Explorer not working, which happens if you deleted a configuration file, that welcome.exe recreates for you.

I tried that and NOW it says I need to configure a proxy.  I do not know for sure as in the first case I merely looked at the assigned IP address and it was 192.168.2.7 (of course that was after I tried to set it as specific so maybe it never cleared) but in the second case I specified the address and name servers.

So just now after I ran all your test steps and this did not work I switched back to Server obtained address and rebooted.  NOW I have a 169.254.x.x address again.

Any thoughts???

Just so you know I can reset the PocketPC if you like there is nothing on it I care about.

I can also reset the AP too.  Even though there is no security there now anyway.

When it asks for a proxy it means your network card configuration (Wireless configuration) on your Pocket PC is incorrectly set to WORK, not INTERNET. You should change this and soft reset the device. Then try again.

The fact that your Pocket PC gets an invalid IP address from your router possibly means that your router configuration is incorrect and DHCP is not enabled on the router, therefore the Pocket PC doesn't get a valid IP address, requiring you to manually enter an IP address. Check this.

OK there are two or three places where I can set "Work", The Internet" and "My ISP"... you may have to give me detailed instructions (even though I followed the ones earlier and it did not work).

But one other thing I just realized... my configuration may make a difference (although I do not know how as I have two children with NintendoDS and they connected perfectly).

Anyway I have a main router that I use with encryption on that wireless.  It is also the router that provides DHCP services.  The AP I am trying to connect the IPAQ to is an AP that is another wireless router that is ONLY ACTING AS A AP.  IT does not provide DHCP.  The upline router should do that.

Does this make a diff????

Start | Settings | Connections | Network Cards | Network Adapters and select the wireless adapter. Then select "The Internet"from the drop down list and click OK.

I am not sure how the routers would work, but your first router should provide DHCP to all devices in your LAN, providing the second AP is in the same subnet.
