I might be able to get hold of a Toshiba Pocket PC e400 very cheaply.
With IR as the only wireless connection it's something I wouldn't ordinarily be interested in.
But, if you have experience with this unit, how would it handle things like
-MP3s
-gaming
-emulation of older gaming systems (if that's possible?)
-movie playback

If it can handle it, I'd probably take it along for some entertainment at airports etc.
The processor is an Intel XScale PXA261 @ 300Mhz with a total of around 60MB.
The Geekzone review is very informative but would like to hear any user experiences - if anyone still remembers this old device!

I have a Dell Axim x50 and even though it's 3 and a bit years old, it still handles everything I throw at it and then some. As far as your concerned, as long as you pick up an SD card with a decent amount of storage on it, you'll be sweet.

MP3s and movies will playback fine - I just use movie Maker in Windows to convert the shows down to a manageable size (though not the best quality, but still very watchable)

As for games, old classics are available (such as SimCity 2000 and Age of Empires I) as well as many others (Girders is a personal favourite). In the emulation scene, it really depends on what you're after specifically, I know that emulators are available for the Gameboy Colour/Gameboy Advance and the Sega Master System but I'm not really into that - it isn't hard to find out more though.

Cool stuff. I just wish this thing had WiFi but it's been offered to me for $100 including docking station and USB cable.
What kind of resolution are you converting your movies to, is it 320x240?

Yup, 320x240. 30 mins end up around 15-20MB, so not too much. As for wifi, you should be able to find an SDIO wifi b/g card for around $90.

Just as a closing post, the Toshiba e400 has turned out to be a great little toy for me. I've put in a 2GB SD-Duo card and have installed TCPMP with all the plugins. It plays my MP3s, reencoded TV programmes, and my favourite YouTube FLVs perfectly. Plus I have installed the ScummVM app for PPC, those old point & click adventures are just the thing for this device. Very happy with this purchase.
