Hey all

I just bought a new E61 with WiFi. Keen to skype on it across WiFi

How and with what is best????

Any ideas apprecited

You should try Fring. It's free and its new version allows "auto roaming": it will automatically connect to trusted Wi-Fi access points (your home and office for example) and route any calls through your VoIP provider instead of mobile provider.

Its clients connects to Skype, SIP, Messenger, Skype, Twitter and more... And it runs on Windows Mobile and Symbian.

Fring is the best option for using Skype on a Nokia handset. No official Skype software exists for the S60 devices, instead 3rd parties have created software that uses their own proxy servers to interface with the Skype network. The downside of this is that even if you're talking to another Skype user in NZ you're going via a proxy server in Europe which causes quite significant delay and is absolutely abysmal for using the SkypeOut service, particularly to NZ which can be very bad at times anyway.

If you're wanting cheap calling from your phone you can always use the SIP VoIP client built into the phone which will work with many of the SIP VoIP providers.

Seems a little dumb that my only option is to route via the UK

Any ideas when a pureplay skype app will be developed? or

We have vfx VoIP in the office, I guess I can use the E61 over WiFi as the sip client with that - any tips as to how?

Skype was working on something for Symbian, lots of rumours around. Excuse me while I get my NDA out of the drawer and stop talking about it now...

As for SIP, for the time being you will need another VoIP provider for you mobile. That's because VFX is not currently available with "bring your own device" option. It means you can only use VFX with their approved devices.

The good side of this is that they can guarantee the quality of service. Many times people cause problems by "tweaking" their VOIP devices or softphone and get mad when they get a bill for a call that wasn't terminated because of the "tweaks".

The bad side is that we don't have a true mobile solution with VFX - yet.

Skype have demonstrated a Symbian version of their client however it's never seen a public release. There are lots of complexities involved in doing this including the issue of Skype being a P2P based application.
