We have an old Lumia 820 lying around here (Vodafone) which I thought I'd get on the technical preview to play with, but its saying no builds available. I have seen that some operators can block it, maybe this is the case here? Have set location and language etc to United States, signed up to Windows Insider etc. Any ideas?

"To get access to the new release, you need to do two things. First, install the Windows Insider app and sign in to it. Second, make sure your phone is on the list of supported models. Currently, that's quite a limited list: the Lumia 630, 635, 636, 638, 730 (though not the 735), and 830 are supported... and that's it. The very low-end Lumia 5xx and 4xx models aren't included, nor are the high-end 9xx, 10xx, 13xx, or 15xx devices."

Not 820 according to that list.....

Duh, of course. Too late on a Friday to notice the difference between 820 and 830 :-)

Yeah was disappointed to read that the other day... I was hoping the 520 would see the preview and give the poor thing a purpose beyond sitting on the bookcase collecting dust :(

I was going to install it on my 830, but it was a Xmas present, and well I don't really want to brick it(not that it probably will).  After watching a video on Windows Phone Central though, 10 for phones looks good, though at this stage, most of the changes are cosmetic.  I hope Cortana is able to be used in NZ without having to change countries once its finally released.

Any news on when a beta emulator and SDK might appear?

I've updated my 1520.

First Insider update appeared to do an 8.1 "b" update - Settings categorised now.  Didn't spot anything else, other than changing setting to Aussie and enabling Cortana (short play with her).

2nd update seemed to be the 10 Tech Preview, started last night, but of *course* it's not fully automatic, thanks MS, I had to press a restart button this morning.

So did that, got the cogs again, the migration, and complete (got the original start screen (saver), not mine - the feathery one).
But swipe up (unlock) and I get "Loading"

Been like that for 3/4hr so far.  I can sorta get into things, eg. search, and get my IE tabs - indeed, it now flicks back to my IE tabs now, if I just leave the "Loading" screen there.  I've got the new Notifications, expandable.  I've been into Wifi (dunno why, but it was not connected, so I've put my password in).

I'm figuring it'll be (another) big reset coming up. ???

Currently pulling the data off the mSD card.  Noted while connected, that on the phone memory there's a text file in Documents called, 'Non-Production Errors'.  The contents are:
// Production Self Test Log

// This log file describes test failures from the Production Self Test.
// If you see this log file, it means that this device is not ready to ship
// because some of the production self tests are failing. If this is a pre-production
// device, this is an expected result and this file can be ignored (or deleted). If this
// is supposed to be a production ready device, check the log below to identify tests that
// are failing, and see the Windows Phone documentation for information on how to fix the
// issues identified by these tests.

TEST FAIL: SBCP Policy Publisher mismatch
TEST FAIL: PRERELEASE: Pre-Release software - Not approved for release

Any suggestions other than the big reset ???

DuckDuckGo'd and deleted the txt file and restarted, no joy.

Currently running the Windows Phone Recovery Tool 2.1.1

Phone detected, "reading phone information" ... waiting :)

Gave up on the waiting after an hour.

Rebooted the phone, restarted the recovery software, detected, analysed, this time it took one minute.

Restoring the "latest" (which looks to be 8.1 and is older than the detected) - OK I can wear that, it's a Tech PReview.

8.1 image (1.7GB) gone back on, and restarting and going through the startup wizard.  Restoring data from June 4th (bugger, shoulda done a backup before I started this stuff).

Hopefully an operational phone in a minute or ten - been out since 10am this morning - it's not like Android is it, where these things take ten minutes and generally work.

Throwing in the towel at the end of round one - we'll come back another day and fight with the 10 Tech Preview, but not today.

Tried it on my Lumia 920. It shows some real promise, but isn't ready for prime time by a long way. It's also slow as a wet week on the 920.

Ahh well, back to 8.1

Seriously looking forward to the Windows on phones future though. Continuum is a great concept, bring it on.
