Does anyone have any ideas when Cotana will officially arrive in NZ?

Have you asked Siri?

Are there any workarounds - eg change region to UK (to get Cortana) and then back to NZ ?

Change your phone region to Australia and leave it there for it to work, if you change your phone back to NZ, Cortana disappears.

Microsoft really need to sort Cortana out for NZ though, they keep on showing it as doing interesting things, but yeah, not for us kiwis.

It is unavailable in most parts of the world, New Zealand is FAR smaller that other markets that it may come to first.

Maybe, but I thought it was very witty.

I wish Microsoft would just combine NZ in with Australia for stuff like this.

I know there are some localisation issues but they could be brought to attention in the same way as Australia is, in restricted Alpha or Beta.

The thing to note, is that Cortana is much more than just the voice stuff, it requires a huge amount more data to drive than they currently have for the NZ market, much of which is driven by Bing and the other partners, until such time as those data sets are built out (no timeline currently), then there will be no Cortana for the NZ market, it sucks, but that's the reality :)

For the time being feel free to switch to US/UK/Australia in the region/speech settings and try things out, but things won't always work/be perfect.

Nope these so called workarounds didn't work for me at all.  Apparently windows phones in NZ wont have the Cortana working untill windows 10 final.  This is a rumor though.

Worked fine for me. I seem to recall I had to play around a bit with setting the right region and language and make sure the appropriate one is set as the default.   But I've been using US cortana for a year(ish?) now without issue and I just setup my wife's phone with UK cortana - also works fine.

Not sure exactly what you mean. It's not like I noticed anything not working or broken, though I don't use it all that much.  It does do some cool things like remind me to go to appointments early based on current (supposed) travel times taking traffic into account. Not sure how accurate it really is in NZ, but seems OK.

I just had another look at how I have my phone setup - it's actually set to region Australia, regional format = English(Australia) and I think when I setup my wife's phone I also changed the speech language on mine to female "English (United Kingdom)"

Cortana is like one of those dream girlfriends you have to wait your life for.

Sometimes you have to date some monsters (like Siri) before the right one arrives.

Still I don't think we should have to wait till W10 though...

Activating Cortana requires changing both the region and language to a supported country - e.g. United States + English US. Requires two reboots. You can leave the regional format as NZ so dates et cetera are still correct. I've done this for all of my Windows phones (Think I have four right now) + several of my family members' phones.

Far & away my favourite implementation of a virtual assistant across all platforms, & well worth doing if you don't mind a few localisation issues, e.g. temperature in Farenheit for US region. Microsoft does collect anonymous usage data for users who have enabled Cortana outside of the official regions, so I like to think I'm helping. :)
