Lumia Denim software update rolls out in New Zealand

Microsoft Devices today announces that the Lumia Denim software update has commenced rolling out to Lumia users in New Zealand. The over-the-air update will become available over the coming weeks, dependent on country and operator variant, with the full range of devices expected to be updated by the end of March.

As well as great new features, the free software upgrade is a step towards Windows 10, which will become available later this year. Our goal is for the majority of the Lumia phones running Windows Phone 8 and 8.1 to join the Windows ecosystem along with an expected hundreds of millions of PCs, tablets and other devices running the next generation of Windows.

Lumia users will be automatically notified of the Lumia Denim update via a prompt on their handset, offering them instant access to the latest Windows Phone 8.1 update, with exclusive experiences for Lumia smartphones.

To check if an update is available manually, users can simply head to settings > phone update > check for updates.

Features and benefits

  • Folders. This update gives users more ways to personalise their phone. On the Start screen, they can create Folders to organise Live Tiles and see popular suggested apps at a glance.
  • Apps. With Apps Corner, users can now set up a custom Start screen for other people who use their phone.
  • Internet. Enjoy improved downloading speeds on mobile websites in IE.
  • Security. Lumia users can also add a personal VPN to protect data on their Lumia while on a Wi-Fi network.

The Lumia Denim update also cements Microsoft’s leadership in imaging with the introduction of unique innovations in Lumia Camera that make photography and video functionality faster and more intuitive. Coming as part of the Lumia Denim update to Lumia 930 and Lumia 830, it offers:

  • Speed. Never miss a moment with Lumia Camera and its fast camera startup and capture speeds. Take numerous photos with just milliseconds between shots.
  • High definition. Using Moment Capture, a long press of the camera button within the app automatically starts 4K-quality video recording at 24 frames per second. Each frame is of high image quality at 8.3 megapixels, allowing every single video frame to be selected and saved as a still image.
  • Intuitiveness. Get the best shot every time with Rich Capture, which simplifies picture-taking with auto HDR and Dynamic Flash. With Rich Capture, people can avoid the hassle of adjusting camera settings; they can shoot first and edit and select the perfect shot later.
  • Quality. Capture high-quality smartphone images in low light with the latest-generation imaging algorithms.
The following devices will receive the Lumia Denim update: Lumia 930, Lumia 635, Lumia 636, Lumia 630, Lumia 830, Lumia 735, Lumia 530, Lumia 925, Lumia 820, Lumia 625, Lumia 520, Lumia 720 and Lumia 620.

we stagger the updates so not everyone receives it at once, so even if it is available, your particular handset may not see it immediately

Lumias are great phones, apart from the screen peeling off issue on mine.
So this is an update for current devices running denim or denim as a whole? As my phone has had denim since I got it at Xmas.

830?

830 had an interim version of Denim

It will get this version that is the final, and will allow you to install and run Lumia Camera 5

The screen issue sounds like you should log a warranty job

Nice, well will look forward to the update on my 830,  as far as the screen issue goes, its lifting off on the left top and side edge, about 1-2cms down the side and across the top.  Taking it in to the store where it was purchased this weekend to see what can be done.

So am I correct in that Denim is specific Lumia code...

So separate to whatever Windows Phone OS is currently loaded - even on Developer Preview?

I have a unlocked Lumia 925 on development preview and received a firmware update to 3051.50009.1451.1001  on the 14th feb . Still waiting on the update to fix deep sleep bug ,Microsoft acknowledged back on 24th November 2014 on some 1020 and 925  . Currently running os: 8.10.14219.341 and wondering what the differences are in later OS 8.10.14226.359

As I understand we are getting Denim.

But we aren't getting the imaging improvements as the 1020 processor is too dated.

edit: or not....

Lumia 1020 Country variant Cyan 8.10.12393.890 3051.50009.1424.0005

edit:
probably due to the 1020 hang/lock bugs that I have been reading about.

I'm still waiting for my 1520 in HK to get it :(  but can someone with Denim explain the changes to the VPN.   Everywhere I see tech sites go "new vpn stuff" and proceed to ignore what that actually is.

I'm hoping for more options than the SSL/IKEv2 stuff we have at the moment.

Warning: reality may differ from above post

Is this something that the 520 phones will get if so do Vodafone and Spark get this as well?

Also, what is apparently new with this update, what is the changelog?
