Hi Gurus

I have the above.  The USB Internet connection works, I can access web pages and pop email.

Of course Bluetooth is the ultimate goal.  I can get a BT connection going OK with the phone "Internet Sharing" achieving connection, completing this with the PC's BT Settings gaining a dynamically assigned IP and gateways from Vodafone to LAN2 and a 3MB connection.  The Dell XP BT software is Toshibe, BT 2.0, stack ver 4.00.22D.

For some reason the 1G LAN1 (previously DHCP) gets assigned 192.168.0.1, but no gateway, when enabling the ICS on the BT LAN2.  Form the notebook I can ping things such as xtra.co.nz, yet not browse or get email.

Can anyone advise me what is required from here?  The Bluetooth information does not seem to cover this scenario.  Certainly some of the information here helped me get connected, especially the correct address of www.vodafone.net.nz.

With many thanks indeed.

To connect to the Windows Mobile "Internet Sharing" you must use a Bluetooth PAN client, not LAP. It looks like your laptop doesn't support PAN< because otherwise you wouldn't need to enable ICS.

Also, 192.168.0.1 is the address assigned to the receiving side of a sharing connection by the ICS. It's a requirement, and of course it shouldn't be assigned to your LAN - it should only be used if you wanted to share the nework FROM your laptop TO your Pocket PC, which is the reverse of what you want to achieve.

Back to the cable.

Thanks Mauricio
The Dell BT LAN uses "Bluetooth PAN from Toshiba". In line with your comments I have disabled the ICS, I can still connect and ping xtra, (average time 26ms!) but still not browse the web.  The BT LAN is all working DHCP with vodafone assigned addresses, including a gateway.  Are you saying BT is not an optoin for me?  (I also note there is a newer WM6 image for the phone(!), I have not upgraded this one yet)

Make sure you are using one of the web APNS on Vodafone, not the WAP connection.

To use the Internet Sharing from your Pocket PC to your laptop, first start and enable the Internet Sharing on your device, then pair the laptop to your Pocket PC. On your laptop refresh the list of services available and then connect to the PAN service. This service will show up in the list if your laptop support it (which seems like).

I am using www.vodafone.net.nz, are you saying I should try the others on the APN list.

I am connecting in the fashion and order you describe to get the pinging connection.  Not sure why I am connected but there not able to access still, I have disabled the Windows security for the connection so its not that stopping me either.

That APN is fine. Interesting you are not getting anything. Do you have any firewall software blocking things? Does your connection get a correct DNS address?

No Firewall software otherwise.
Network connections details on the PC:
Ip Address 169.254.X.Y, mask 255.255.0.0, Gateway and DNS server: 169.254.247.131 where X and Y are different from the Gateway.

Also if DNS was not working correctly I would presumably not be able to ping xtra?  (xtra.co.nz)

Download VxUtil and install on your Pocket PC... Check the IP address there and check the IP address on your laptop. Perhaps they are not in the same subnet, or have problems with gateway?

At this stage you are back to "network" which requires finding if all the devices in the LAN have the correct settings etc... Can you ping the Pocket PC from your laptop? Can you do the same the other way?

Do you have the laptop disconnected from the other networks so you are sure that when you ping xtra.co.nz it's really going through the Vodafone network, etc?

The IP address you gave seems strange. It's more like the IP you get when a DHCP server is not available to assign an IP.

Just to test I got my Okta Touch here, started the Internet Sharing application and plugged in. The IP address for the gateway (the Okta Touch) should be 192.168.0.1. My laptop received 192.168.0.102.

I am posting this reply via CDMA EVDO (hence the different flag) via my Pocket PC.

Make sure your own other network doesn't use 192.168.0.x otherwise you will have conflicts - or at leat unplug the laptop from any other network.

Ooops, sorry, check my flag now ;) - certainly connected through the CDMA network through my Pocket PC - but I am using the USB cable for this.

Check your settings, make sure your Bluetooth configuration is correct, no firewall, make sure you can ping 192.168.0.1 (the Pocket PC) and no other LAN is active.

Kewl!
I have taken care to test with the LAN disconnected.  On XP doing ipconfig showed the LAN to be disconnected and therefore no IP noted, I am using DHCP on the LAN, unfortunately using 192.168.0.x, however 192.168.0.1 is not assigned to anything.  (Yes it will be a major to change away from the 0.x!  )  Will do the vxUtil thing.  Does CDMA also use full DHCP to your mobile there?

I would first try with the USB Cable to make sure it works - only then try the Bluetooth path.

Even if your network is using 192.168.0.x then it should work while disconnected from that network.

Your Pocket PC will always be 192.168.0.1 and it should be the gateway you see when running IPCONFIG on your laptop.

Give me a few minutes and I will test with a Vodafone connection.

I appreciate your most timely assistance!  The USB Internet connection works, I can access web pages and pop email.  I'll see what IP addresses I get using that.

OK using USB cable, xp's ipconfig tells me it is using LAN4 gateway 192.168.0.1 (presumably the phone) and 192.168.0.17 for XP.
