If I want to put 10 preview on a handset will it go on the cheapie ones that are locked to vodafone ok or does the lock prevent it?

The lock is only a SIM lock. It does not prevents a user from loading whatever preview OS is available. You do void your warranty though with VF if the phone was to have any issues while it was running preview OS.
