Hi everyone. Just thought I would drop a line about the announcement Nokia made yesterday about a new subscription music service ´ Comes with Music´. Basically once it starts handsets will come with a subscription (built into the cost of the handset) that lets you download unlimited music for a year - and get this: at the end of the year when your subscription lapses YOU GET TO KEEP THE MUSIC. You heard me right, its yours. The music is DRM'd though so clearly how it will play out is a little murky right now, but nevertheless it sounds pretty amazing. At this stage the only label signed is Universal, but if it pans out this will quickly grow.

from Engadget

"While it appears free to end users, the cost is baked into the handset and/or data plans from your friendly neighborhood carriers. Oh, and it's slathered in DRM -- PlaysForSure DRM in fact making your tracks incompatible with both Zunes and iPods. Burning a CD will require an "upgrade purchase" for the tracks you received for free. "

So basically play it on your phone only (or pay to write to CD - who still uses CD????)

Any word for us with nokia handsets (like the n95) to opt into this service? (cost, etc)
I'm picking the compatible handsets will be at least the vodafone live ones as they can support DRM.

This is a great offer, I think this takes music phones even further to the masses!

If only more studios joined

A few questions...

Vodafone already has a competing music service, so will this service by Nokia still be available to handsets purchased through Vodafone?

Will this be available worldwide on launch?

Will parallel imported handsets be able to take advantage of this?

Can music be downloaded from the handset using Wifi or 3G connections?

That was terrible reporting from Engadget - they should try a little fact checking in the future. My faith in Engadget has taken a knock since I saw that item.

The files will work on your PC too.

Burning to CD will require an upgrade purchase as stated, however as you rightly point out this will prove a barrier to distinct minority of users.

I would imagine more studios will join if it proves a success.

Regarding your questions:

- Vodafone have indicated they will co-operate, one of their top-brass was a speaker at the conference. Remains to be seen how this will work in practice of course

- The roll out is unlikely to be world-wide, but this won't affect New Zealand a great deal as our handset releases are so far behind everyone else - except for:

- parallel imported handsets: I have no definitive answer here. It should work fine, as Nokia music store lets you choose other localities, so you just choose the point of origin of the device.

- Yes, WiFi and 3G downloads will be possible (they already are in the music store).
