Hi,

My Nokia 625 has given up, the screen seems to have finally stopped.

I'm after a recommendation for another Windows phone preferable under $400 as I need two due to the better half's 625 also having screen problems.

With all the model naming that Microsoft are using it is hard to work if a phone is new or getting passed it. We would like a reasonable camera as it's the only one we are using, were on 2degrees, would like a screen around 5" or the same size as the 625 and the best speed we can get for the price.

The 640 looks OK and its around the $300 mark, or is the 830 better.. but it looks harder to source.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

David

I've got a Lumia 830 which I've had since March this year.  I'm really happy with it in all respects, especially the battery life, camera quality and wireless charging.

Previously I had a 720 which was OK in most respects except for speed.  The lack of RAM (only 512MB) was a real handicap with apps taking much longer to load than they do on my 830.  The worst example of the lack of speed was the lag time from pressing the dedicated camera button until the camera app had loaded and was ready to shoot.  All too often the opportunity to take the photo was lost, whereas my 830 is ready to shoot in 1/4 of the time or less, and the camera quality (lens and sensitivity) are much better than the 720.

I picked up my 830 for $400 second hand (it was originally sold by Spark).  If you can get a phone in mint condition for that sort of money, it's probably the best option as it will work on Spark's 700MHz 4G band, but if that doesn't pan out, have a look on Amazon:

Their 'international' version will only run in 4G mode when you are within 1800 or 2600MHz coverage though.

P.S.  This is an absolute bargain with Wireless Charger included @ $350:

Lumia 735 @ $299 from Harvey Norman?  (I guess they have it lower at sale time? - yeah looks like they do it for $246 on sale) I got my better half one and it seems quite nice, other than the lack of a hardware camera button!
