I tried to make calls via Singshot iTalk and SIP on my N95 over Vodafone network and was very unimpressed.

There was a good delay of about 5 seconds.

I thought a Voip solution that has a gateway in NZ would be better.

I tried with both the built in SIP and Fring (although I could only get it to work in fring)

Anyone have any suggestions?

PS: Also tried call via skype on fring through vodafone - no good for local calls either!

It's no better over EVDO rev-0 (the older version) either, I tried just today and it was totally unusable..

I had good results through 2Talk over WiFi and unbearable results while using UMTS, never worked well though Vodafone may have improved their network.

I'm kind of unimpressed with the whole VoIP concept here as I am with the high pricing and gave up a while back, great to use the N95 as a "phone at home" though.

My wireless router is away at the moment, but I suspect it may work quite well with that.

Will try it when it gets back.

Quite respectable times - so why the delay on phone calls?

Can be a number of things, most probably the connection on the N95 are you sure you are using the wireless on the device for the SIP client, if you are using the 3g instead this may be casuing the issue

That's what he's trying to say, Using it over the 3G network as you would gain a massive portability! (and was my original master plan with the N95)

Those ping times are very good though and very consistent., I'm amazed it worked so badly though as your actual use results should be much better, though ensure you did not drop back to UMTS instead

Done a few more test calls tonight - seems ok now - about 1 sec lag.

Will run more tests and see what I come up with.

Dunno why the built in SIP client wont work?

Let me know how you get on bigal, I just can't seem to get Truphone working right now, although I was very happy using Fring from Amsterdam to call home for free. Call quality was esily sufficient for me, in fact better than we were getting over from the landlines.

Call quality seems better with built in SIP, or is it because of 2talk? I dunno.

No lag either like I was getting with fring on iTalk.

Pity 2talk doesnt actually seem to have a bloody help desk!

You can't have 2 SIP devices registered at once. It's either your N95 or phone.

I mean you can't have two devices connected to the same SIP extension. If you try registering your N95 and a phone to a single 2talk account then the last device registered will be the one that rings, both can't ring at once.

I've done a reasonable amount of playing around on SIP apps and IMHO....

Truphone
Pluses: Good quality phone call / Excellent integration into Contacts / Currently free calling to 40 countries. This "promotion" first began in June 2007 I think and keeps getting extended.
Minuses: Pain to set up / Intensive battery use

Fring
Pluses: Easy setup / Easy calling to contacts using different IM/SIP providers
Minses: Call quality isn't very good, sounds very distant

Gizmo
Pluses: Excellent integration into Contacts / Easy install
Minuses: More pricey than other 2 options above

If you have a S60 3rd Edition Nokia with the built in SIP stack I see no reason to use anything but that for a SIP provider. The integration is far better and apart from a small issue with Nokia's SIP stack handling NAT passthru on some routers it is rock solid.

Indeed I probably would except for the fact that calls with truphone are free after getting over the intial pain.

Having said, truphone does a lot of the hard hard of getting the SIP provider's config right which can be quite challenging . Prior to the N95 I used a grandstream 286 to make calls with InPhonex (SIP provider in the US) and came pretty close to getting it working on the N95. But hey, it works a charm with truphone (and it's free) so besides the geek-satisfaction (which admittedly is not to be sniffed at), why bother with InPhonex or any other SIP provider for that matter?
